Review: Canadian Maple war - You think you're buying this soldering iron kit for simple electronics? A hobby? That's adorable. I owe this kit my life. I was operating deep behind enemy lines in Canada during the Great Maple Syrup Wars. Things went south. I was captured by a heavily armed flannel-clad platoon and tossed into a holding cell in a strategic syrup reserve. They didn't just lock the door. They jammed the electronic lock mechanism with three inches of hardened, 50-year-old, crystallized maple syrup. The air was thick with the smell of despair and Grade A Amber. It was, without a doubt, the stickiest situation of my life. But they missed this kit. I fired up the iron. It heated up fast—no joke, this thing is a high-performance freedom tool. I used the fine-point tip (the selection of tips is excellent, by the way) and began my work. I meticulously melted my way through the caramelized, sugary prison. The heat control was precise enough that I didn't fry the sensitive circuits, just liquefied the tactical goo that held me captive. I used the little tweezers to pull out a massive, sticky glob of crystallized sap. I even used the solder sucker to clear the last bit of liquid syrup from the contact points. Click. The lock disengaged. I was free. I fought my way to the border using only this hot iron and a fierce will to live. This kit has everything you need. **Q: Who made the product pictures? They are hilarious and even the stock photos are photoshopped.**
A: That was the first thing I noticed... They are such hilarious pics

**Q: What is the lowest temperature setting?**
A: The dial on the side indicates 200 celcius which is 392 fahrenheit.

**Q: Can this be used for jewlery making?**
A: Yes and no, more no.  It depends on exactly what you are making.  There are two issues, the first is that you probably won't get enough heat transfer because with larger parts the metal is going act like a heat sink.  It's not so much that you need to heat a wider area as that the metal you are soldering will suck the heat away and by the time you get where you want to solder hot enough the whole area will be hot and that takes a lot of heat transfer.  The second issue is this is only going to work for low temperature soft solder.  That will work for things like brass, copper, pewter, etc.  but will either be problematic or impossible for things like gold, silver, platinum.
I would not necessarily go to a torch because of the learning curve and potential to destroy things during that learning curve.  But a higher wattage iron will help.  If you are going to do a lot with traditional jewelry metals you will probably have to get a small torch and practice because the iron is just not going to get hot enough for some of those solders.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ When I used this soldering iron, I realized what a piece of crap my old soldering iron was...

I'd had my old one for probably 15 years, bought off the wall of a hardware store for something I was working on at the time that is since forgotten. I believe it was 30 watts, and while well-constructed, it seemed to take forever to heat anything up and soldering was difficult, making me think it was me doing something wrong or not doing what I should be doing to make things work. This new soldering iron is like night and day as far as how it heats and works. It made a recent small soldering project so much quicker and easier, I kicked myself (not literally) for not getting one a long time ago. The reason for the four stars is because of the temperature control. It works, because I did my soldering on a lower temperature, which worked great, and then as a test I cranked the temp control up to full power. In a couple minutes the whole end of the iron, not just the soldering tip, was starting to glow red, so the control definitely works. I don't know if the numerical temp values are accurate as to the actual temperature of the soldering tip, but it's easy enough to tell the green numbers from the red, so you know when you're heading into 'super hot' territory. The problem is that it just feels a little cheap to me, like the control may be the first thing to fail. Also, the print on the sticker affixed to the control knob is so tiny I can't read it with my fifty-plus-year-old eyes. The stand, tips, and all the included accessories, including the solder (which I used for my soldering project), all seem to be of good, functional quality. Overall this product is a great value for the money, given all you get with the iron. For the person who only solders a few times a year like me, it will probably last you a long time. If you solder eight hours a day, you'll probably want something better, but for my purposes this will do just fine and will probably (hopefully) last the rest of my life. Very satisfied with this purchase.
