Even though it’s plastic it does have a sturdy feel to it. The suction cup at the bottom can slip when using the sharpener (minus 1 star) but being careful, you can hold the base down when drawing the knife towards you giving a sturdy feel. When sharpening a knife you can see the grindings on each pass leaving a nice sharp edge. If your knife is blunt it may take a few passes to sharpen but will do the task for you.
