They are imported from Spain, where pasteurization is not a requirement. They are never treated by irradiation, ultra high heat, steam, or chemically sterilized as is required for all domestically grown almonds. **Q: Why are they not pasturized. can't unpasturized make me ill "if" they are not exceptionally cleaned?** A: I buy these almonds specifically because they are raw and NOT pasteurized. Pasteurization is usually either done by high heat, which destroys some of the nutritional value of the nuts, or by toxic chemicals, which no one should want touching anything they consume. Almonds grown in the US are required to be pasteurized because of a salmonella outbreak back in the early 2000's (I think.) As far as I'm concerned, that's just paranoia and/or lobbyists' work.
