Review: at last! - for years, i've been addicted to maybelline's retractable brow pencil. the company appears to have deserted its customers by changing the product several times and finally, it seems, not making it anymore. you can buy it on desertcart for about $12 in velvet black. i just saw the dark brown for nearly $20. i couldn't deal with that. my search for a suitable replacement led me to this product. after reading the reviews, i gathered that the major complaint about this particular nyx pencil was color inaccuracy. a little less problematic was the strange oval shape of the crayon. since i only use black brow pencils (hard to mess that up, right?) and the shape of its tip doesn't matter to me, i gave it a try. after using this pencil for 3 months, i can officially declare myself a satisfied customer. (i didn't want to review any sooner because i gave a good review of another pencil within a few days after purchase and the blasted thing started crumbling almost immediately. couldn't even be applied anymore since most of it ended up in the bathroom sink.) nyx's black is a good match for mabelline's velvet black, it hasn't crumbled on me and the price is excellent. i haven't paid so little for a brow pencil in years. my only complaint about this product involves something that most people would see as a plus. it's that brush. everybody's making brow pencils with little brushes attached. sticking out on the side as it does, this one is kind of in the way. i'm accustomed to just picking up a pencil and using it, not turning it to get the brush off my finger. i eventually sniped the brush off. i see this as an unnecessary addition. who doesn't have a brow brush, an old mascara wand or even a child's (or your own old) toothbrush for this job? surely the product would cost less without it. please know that this is not a dig at those who like having the brush right there on the pencil. reviews indicate that some users love it. i don't. but that isn't stopping me from giving this pencil all the stars desertcart allows. for those of you who are bothered by the crayon's shape, here's what i've noticed. when maybelline stopped providing a sharpener, i got ticked but decided to deal with it. i finally realized that it's not necessary, even with a crayon as broad as the one from nyx. getting a fine line is as simple as turning the pencil a little to get the side that has become sharper from use, and not pressing hard. you can do this with pretty much any brow pencil. a huge plus is that you don't lose your crayon to unneeded sharpening. your brow pencil lasts longer. good tools, a steady hand and perfect brows to all! (no thanks to maybelline!!!)
Review: First time trying this - And I love it!! I have been using Covergirl Brow & Eye Makers in Midnight Brown for YEARS and have been primarily content but occasionally frustrated beyond words with them. The color is near perfect and the product typically goes on smoothly and easily though every now and then it seems like I get a couple of bum pencils that want to go on either blotchy and too thick or unevenly and way too lightly. It also seems that out of every maybe 8-10 purchases of the Covergirl product, I will get a pack of 2 pencils in which one if not both of them are IMPOSSIBLE to sharpen without constantly breaking. I have used ENTIRE pencils in one sitting because I could not, not matter what I did, what sharpener I used, how slowly or gently I tried sharpening it, get anywhere near a fine point on the pencil without the pigment breaking completely off. I understand that the Covergirl Brow and Eye Makers are not exactly top of the line eyebrow pencils, they sell for under $10, usually quite a bit under, and are widely available at pretty much every drugstore, grocery store, and discount store in the free world. However, Covergirl has been around for awhile and is a well-known brand with a great reputation, and I feel like they totally ripped me off hundreds of times over, especially when it comes to the eyebrow pencils and eyeliners I have purchased from them over the years. I love their Simply Powder compacts and though I have tried more expensive, "better" compacts, I keep coming back to Simply Powder because it is an awesome product that works great for me and is also extremely affordable. I don't know what their deal with eye pencils is and I no longer care, the NYX Auto Eyebrow Pencil 05 Dark Brown has permanently taken my eyebrow pencil business away from Covergirl forever. This pencil does not need sharpening and although it does not self-sharpen to an extremely fine tip, the "wedge" shape of the pigment makes it easy to draw either a wider or a much more narrow line by simply changing the angle at which you're drawing so that you are using the thin part of the wedge instead of the thicker part. The thinnest part is still a tad too thick for the ends of my brows but is easily adjusted to a much finer point with the gentle aid of a very sharp "exacto" knife, the kind I typically use for craft projects in which I cut small chunks of fimo clay off the "log" it comes packaged as, or need to make nonlinear cuts in paper. This eyebrow pencil covers easily and does not easily clump or smear. There is also a stiff little brush on the end that comes in really handy for blending the product once it has been applied and for straightening out any clumped up brow hairs on the rare occasions they get clumped up with pigment. I LOVE this eyebrow pencil! I have been trying different brow pencils for awhile now in hopes of finding an affordable replacement for the disappointing Covergirl Brow & Eye Makers I've been using for so long, and it looks like the NYX Auto Eyebrow Pencil is it. It's the perfect color, the price is certainly right, and the issues with breakage and getting a fine enough point that I was having with the Covergirl product will not be a problem with the NYX pencil. I only received my pencil about 2 weeks ago so I cannot yet say how long the pencil lasts. I have been using it at least 6 days a week and it is fine so far, no indication yet that it is about to "run out." As soon as I figure out the approximate life span of the product I will update. The seller also did pretty good, I received my brow pencil one day after they latest they estimated I would receive it. It was packaged a little sloppily but no worse for wear, my brow pencil was still in the manufacturer's packaging and obviously new and unused. When I opened it, I found it to be in perfect condition. I would definitely give the seller another chance but might be wary of purchasing anything very fragile from them based upon the sloppy packaging on this item. One day late is no big deal to me, especially considering that the shipping was free. All in all they did a good job and I am happy with them and VERY happy with my eyebrow pencil :)

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best store bought pencil i've found.
*by L***. on August 17, 2014*

I've tried a lot of eyebrow pencils and powders and waxes and so on. If your on a budget like i am you've probably tried all the cheaper eye brow products like i have i can't afford the high end kind i've tried all the brands you can get at your local stores like target, rite aid, cvs, walgreens, walmart, kamart and so on and none of them are amazing, i have yet to find an eye brow product that was fully water proof or does it says it will do but this one by far is my fav out of all i've tried. Yes the colors are off and yes the tip of it isn't pointy enough but you can always use a angled brush and some concealer to fix your lines or thats what i do But i put this on and its on all day i don't have to worry about it coming off It doesn't smudge easily but i don't touch or rub my face like normal people do because i don't want to ruin my makeup I have to scrub my face a few times at night to get all the eye brow pencil off. I found what helps make it set and not smudge is after i apply it i put some translucent powder over my brows once im done and that sets it all day and i never have to worry about my brows. I also sometimes use the pencil and then add the eyebrow cake powder by NYX to make them look thicker and darker if i over pluck an area because sometimes that happens or if i just want a more dramatic look and that lasts all day as well. The colors i've tried, light brown, brown, medium brown, auburn. My hair is died auburn my hair is naturally a dark brown i lighten up my brows to a dark auburn thats the lightest i can get mine without them looking orange. Auburn: is to light and too orange to be auburn, if your a strawberry blonde then i think that shade will work for you Medium brown: is still lighter then what a normal medium brown but if you have light brown hair i think this will work for you. Light Brown:, To me looked more like auburn it has a more red tint then brown but it was to light for my brows since my brows are a darker auburn. Brown: Is the shade i use for my brows it looks like a dark auburn or med brown it does have a red tint to it but not as bad as the light brown in my opinion. They say always buy a shade lighter then your brows but for this product i would say buy 1 shade darker since the colors are off. These are my opinions of what i think will work for different hair colors you should go to target or ulta or where ever sales this brand to look at it in person i wouldn't buy this on the internet without looking at it first in person this is for people who can't find this brand where they live. If you have light brown or chestnut use brown or medium brown if your hair is medium brown then this is where it gets tricky because you can use brown, med brown or dark brown depending on your hair color i would go to the store and look at those 3 colors to see which one matches your hair/brow color the best. or if you can't then brown might be your best bet. If you are med blonde and dark blonde, taupe and light brown pencil should work for you If your light blonde then use taupe If your strawberry blonde then i would use the taupe or auburn Dark brown hair use the dark brown or black Black hair use black Auburn use auburn or light brown Dark auburn use brown or medium brown. Brown and medium brown eye brow pencil are to me anyways very close to the same shade the medium brown to me has more of a red tint which is a little lighter then the brown but they are very close in color. Just one is more red then the other you would think the medium brown would be darker then the brown but its the other way around. I hope this helps Like i said go to the store an look at these in person and apply them on your hand before you buy that will be your best bet. I gave this 4 stars because the colors are off but besides that this is the best eye brow pencil i've tried it doesn't go on heavy unless you keep applying it to make it look heavy and it doesn't clump in your eyebrows i did have 1 pencil out of about 10 that was dry and did clump but im guessing it was just an old pencil that i got off the shelf because i have never had that problem before of since then.
