We first used the cord way and the micro USB actually broke. Luckily the battery spot works just fine so be prepared to use batteries fast, you're gonna go though them.

This is a great lamp! My granddaughter is a huge Minecraft fan and she loved it for Christmas! And it works as advertised. The only slightly weird thing is that it plugs in with a USB port, but it doesn't charge batteries. You can certainly use rechargeable batteries in it, but you will have to charge them somewhere else. Fortunately, when it is on battery it automatically shuts off after a few minutes, so the batteries actually last longer than I would have thought.
