I think it should have no problem with Windows 8, but I don't speak from personal experience **Q: does this work on mac with steam?** A: The activation code will definitely work, assuming it isn't used.The disc will NOT work, but this doesn't actually matter because you can download the games through Steam once activated.Even if the disc worked you would still have to download all the updates released since 2007 before the games will even run, so unfortunately lengthy downloading is unavoidable. **Q: So I hear that you have to "Download" this game from steam even with the disc. Is that true? Or is the game installed from the the disc through steam?** A: The disc contains ONLY Steam client. No game. No extras. Nothing. And since this game is pretty old, the disc contains a pretty old Steam client. Currently (Jan 29, 2015) the Orange box on steampowered "dot" com is listed at $19.99, so it's cheaper to buy the box from amazon ($16.03 as of Jan 29, 2015). But at times the price on steam goes down to about $5 for all games (for example currently Portal is $2.49, but it was sometime for $0.00).
