You furnish the cake pan to shake the bees into from a frame of capped and uncapped brood, a water bottle, and a white or serving plate to shake the mites into. 1. Open your hive and select a frame with open and capped brood. Make sure the queen is not on it. 2. Shake the frame over a cake pan or similar to dislodge the bees. 3. Remove the screen lid from the test jar and fill it with bees up to the line marked on the side of the bottle. This is about 1/2 cup, or 300 bees. 4. Screw the lid back on the jar and press 2 table spoons of powdered sugar through the screen. 5. Roll the jar until all the bees are coated with sugar, and then set it in the shade for 2 minutes. 6. The mites will fall off the bees, and you can shake the sugar and mites out of the jar. It takes a full minute of shaking, but it does not hurt the bees. 7. Add a cup of water to the to disolve the sugar, which makes the mites easy to count. 8. Since you tested about 300 bees, you divide the number of mites by 3 to get a number of mites per 100. 9.
