It was more for the kids, but we were looking for an opportunity to polish rocks we found at the beach and do it as a family. At the end of the 4+ week process, we found that the rocks were still a little dull. So we got these plastic fillers and ran it through the polish process again because we read that this helped with the overall shine . It definitely did. The rocks break down during the early phases of the tumbling process and they need some filler to keep the friction during the tumbling process to keep the barrel full. I think if the barrel isn't full, the barrel doesn't get enough friction to polish properly. It has been so much fun to do this with the kids. They love the end product. We already started the next batch of rocks. Fingers crossed, we are hoping for some more polished results.
