Otherwise maybe avoid :( - I love the book, but maybe should come with a trauma trigger warning. I just wish it was only about hair love instead of what a great dad this girl has. My son’s father won’t even speak to him because he’s gay. I got the book to honor his hair and his blackness, but it was a shock to feel so alienated while reading it because the focus was placed on the father. And the end reason for loving her hair is not it’s uniqueness or beauty, it because her hair “is daddy.” I ended up trying to spin it as an example of how he can be a good father to his daughter one day. It’s the best I can do. Needless to say, my idea of supporting his self-esteem and identity kinda backfired with this particular story. However, it was a really sweet story, and I do actually understand why she says that he hair is mommy, daddy, and me.
