Before installing it I put in a fresh battery and pressed the button and got a good spark between the two ports, without anything plugged into them. After the arduous 1-minute installation process, it worked right away. OK, I was just kidding about arduous. Push the connectors on, slide it into the hole, screw on the set nut, insert battery, screw on top/button, bingo.
