I had the NSPS Circle A training years ago and this was a great refresher, and added a great deal to what I had learned before. Highly recommend. Review: Great prep for AIARE1 - This book was recommended to me by an experienced Backcountry skier, and it served as Great preparation for the AIARE1 training course. The book is fairly technical and it focuses on the WHY, not just what to be aware of. Great read if you recreate in the Backcountry in the winter.

Required reading for anyone who wants to backcountry!
Amazing book. Highly recommend if you are interested in backcountry skiing. A lot of information about “snow science” and how to (as the title says) stay alive.

Great intro to Avvy safety
Read this book on the plane on the way to a helicopter skiing trip. Helped educate me and made me feel more confident, not that it replaces field work. I like the author's point of view and writing style. Good background into the snow science also. Highly recommend.

Indespensible
This book is an absolute necessity for anybody recreating in avalanche terrain. It was recommended to me by a friend, who lent me the book. A few chapters in, I purchased my own copy. I will be rereading/referencing this book for the rest of my life. The writing is good, entertaining, and packed with knowledge. The diagrams and photos are well-laid-out and descriptive.

excellent book
Required reading if you want to do what the title says. Broad and deep and easy to follow through a complex technical and emotional topic. Thank you Bruce!

Excellent and easy to read
This is a great book that should be read by all who venture into snowy mountains. My only complaint with it is his reference to risk homeostasis like it is a fact when it is merely a poorly supported hypothesis with numerous studies and examples that make it very nearly disproved, if not completely so. Otherwise it is quite informative and I learned much from it, making it a solid 5 stars.

Bruce Tremper has done it again with a tremendous and significant addition to the library of every serious avalanche enthusiast. As a mountain guide and avalanche professional I only wish this book had been available as a reference for my foundational years. This is an amazing summation of the state of the art from the recreational users perspective and even a good read for active practitioners. My only negative comment is that the Kindle edition occasionally has some odd formatting when it comes to photos and captions and how they lay out in relation to the text. Having said that, you really need to own this book if you travel in snow covered mountains in the winter.
