A Windows 8 Programming Classic
There are a lot of books you need to read as a developer, but few turn into the life saving reference classics like the Petzold Windows books. This like the editions for older versions of windows head into every nook and cranny of the runtime you will need, with well worked examples, which in themselves are as valuable as the book itself. There are few developers who have built deep Windows applications who has not "reimagined" some of the code that Petzold has provided in his books and the 6th edition is no different.if you are serious about building Windows 8 applications you need this book

Not what I was expecting
I have had all the Charles Petzold books through the years but feel this one is the most difficult to follow. The structure of the book seems very random compared with other books on this subject. Although he does go into some topics in depth the samples and code are very specific and don't translate easily into the real world. If this was the first book I had read on XAML I think I would have given up. Wrox have an excellent book on Windows 8 programming which is a lot more general than this on and ultimately more useful on a day to day basis. Others may disagree with me on this but I wont be picking this book up that often and it will be an early trade in for me.

This is a completely new book, not a sixth edition
It seems disingenuous to call this the sixth edition. Sure, over a decade has passed since the 5th edition was published, but this book's legacy sits squarely within the traditional Windows API. This is a completely rewritten book. Instead of pages of C code, you'll find XAML and C#. Nothing wrong with that, and indeed that's the vision for Windows 8+, however if you buy this book hoping for updated coverage of traditional Windows API programming then the book will be useless to you.Amazon helpfully suggests buying this edition on the product page of the fifth edition. This is definitely not the same book.
