The Pilgrim's Progress Review: Recommended Christian classic. - An old story of the Christian walk personified. Our hero journeys through the Christian life, getting bogged down in and overcoming the obstacles, taking wron turns, believing the wrong people, etc. But all Christians pass through the Christian life doing these same things for we face the same adversary and the same world, and live in the corrupted temple of flesh. It is not new, but it is shown in the light of day, personified in the story of one man's Christian walk a long time ago. You will see your own spiritual battles from a different and enlightening viewpoints. It is particularly encouraging when you recognize our hero facing things at some stage of his Christian walk that we are facing today in our present Christian walk and we start making comparisons. We see Christian values such as persistence, discernment, and getting back up after falling down to rejoin the race before us. This book exposes much about the nature of humanity, God, Satan, the world and the new Christian nature from God. The language is not modern English but the picture it paints is not obscured by that. I think it adds character to the story rather than hindering it. Your mileage may vary. I believe (subject to verification) that this story is in the public domain due to its age. Some books are just better in print than on screen. The Bible for one and this for another, though your opinion may be different. Review: An Absolute Gem of a Book! - I've had the classic original version for many years. My husband wanted the updated version with modern English. This is marvelous. It's a beautiful book from cover to cover. This allegory of salvation is priceless. It's the journey we all must take if we are to have an eternal home with the Lord. After the Holy Bible, this is the most popular and most read book in history. A must-read for ALL!

Excellent rendition of the old classic!
Having never read the original Pilgrim's Progress which was written in the 17th century in "the King's English", I cannot actually testify that this is an improvement. But it was because of the difficulty of Bunyan's original English that I never read Progress. I purchased this edition to read aloud to a church group, and it was quite readable and understandable, for the most part. When it was necessary to retain some of the old terminology, most of the time there were explanatory footnotes. Other words just had to be looked up in the dictionary, which was fun in itself. For instance, I ran into the phrase, "stalking horse". I had no idea what it meant and there was no notation. I discovered that it referred to a horse that is used as cover when hunting, with the hunter walking behind the horse. There were a number of occasions when my vocabulary was enriched in this way. But the story line is just superb! Both Christian and his wife (in part 2) make their way from the city of Destruction (name any place on Earth) to the Celestial City (Heaven). Their journeys, and the struggles with which they meet, along with the companions that assist them, are perfect pictures of the Christian life. I have heard a number of pastors say that if they could only own three books, Pilgrim's Progress would be one of them, and this edition is quite well done without losing the Old English flavor of the original. Extremely highly recommended for all Christians who find themselves as aliens and strangers here in this world, longing to go Home.

Plenty of progress for all pilgrims here.
This is a great Christian classic! It is a straightforward allegory of the perils of the Christian life. The main protagonist is literally named Christian, and he is on a literal journey to heaven. But it is also a great portrait of the struggles of the human spirit individually and the human condition collectively. I would put it with such favorite reads of mine as 'The Hobbit' and 'Watership Down'. Struggle and hope, faith versus adversity, any athlete and/or person struggling with their faith and looking for inspiration can take this book to their favorite quiet spot, and not be disappointed. Any business person looking for motivation: ditto. It deals with virtually every type of struggle known to man. It deals with rejection, physical adversity, hopelessness, doubt, temptations to comfort and ease, guilt, and so on, and does so very creatively. And if you ever wondered where the term "vanity fair" came from, I think this book must be it's origin. Vanity fair is an interesting place to visit, but you don't want to live there! It is a must read, and not just for Christians. Look, just read it, okay?

Amazing book
Probably one of the best supplementary christian books I've ever read. It talks about the pitfalls common to the christian life, saving faith, fake christians, the pain of leaving people behind, loss, and finally the kingdom. Such a good picture of the christian life.

Great Analogy. Every Christian should !
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. What a creative way to write about the christian walk. My only complaint is with the typographical errors. That is Amazon's problem. I cannot hold that against the author. Pilgrims Progress is a great way too take look at how people come to realize their sinful nature and their need for salvation through Jesus. It also demonstrated how each of our personalities comes into play in our spiritual journey and how as Christians, we rely on each other to get through life. It also supports the fact that your life and your testimony as a christian will be used beyond your earthly existence, as we saw with Christian. His walk affected many people long after he died. In fact it was through his death that his wife became a believer along with his children. It also shows how some people can begin a Christian walk, but end up abandoning the faith for various reasons. A good warning for us all to never give up when this earthly life is discouraging.

A Journey Unlike Any Other
One of the greatest summaries of the Christian life that is fully surrendered to Christ. Great starting point for those who need an easily digestible story.

The Pilgrims Progress is a must read for every Christian. John Bunyan wrote an allegory about the Christian life, and the difficulties that a Christian will face. We follow a men called Christian, he goes on a pilgrimage and he faces many difficulties throughout his pilgrimage. The difficulties and other things like faithfulness are described as Persons that he meets on his pilgrimage. I don’t think anyone could have done a better job than John Bunyan. And the way he wrote this Story is really good and entertaining. I would say that even non Christian’s will enjoy this Book. It was sometimes difficult to read as someone who’s first language isn’t English. So if your English is not the yellow from the egg( Germans will get it), then it will be quiet difficult. I highly recommend this Book to every Christian, and even non Christians. 5/5 Stars
