Simply an amazing and stupendous piece of work.
I've tied flies for almost fifty years now. Originally making poppers for panfish and bass, then some clumsy attempts at flies for trout. I got my first boost into decent tying by following detailed instructions in a Poul Jorgenson book back in the early seventies. Since then most of the techniques I learned, I learned by trying again and again till a particular technique seemed right. My next boost came with the internet, but even then most directions for any particular technique were sparse and often quixotic. To this day, the internet is a boon but not complete or comprehensive and it is rife with false leads. Recently, that is over the last twenty five years there has been a surge of excellent fly fishing books with excellent instructions, clear color photos often combined with explanatory stories about the fly or flies. The Fly Tier's Benchside Reference is a decided culmination in fly tying information. I am amazed at the sheer volume of work that must've gone into this compilation. Knowledge of all these techniques and their variances is one thing. Stripping the techniques down to their basic components, quantifying and grouping the techniques, organizing them with a cross referenced index, matching every technique with the clarifying photographs, and describing every step of a technique is just a stupendous effort. I am glad that this reference does not describe specific fly patterns. Fly patterns are extremely variable depending on where and when they are tied. Patterns change from season to season, year to year, decade to decade, stream to stream, state to state, country to country. New tying techniques may be developed or they may evolve or be refined but they are rarely discarded. This reference is a valuable book to have in one's library and will remain so for decades. I wish it was in a three ring binder so new pages could be added. I haven't quite figured out how to keep this book benchside as I don't have enough room for it and my tying gear at the same time, but it is the first book in a long time that I would like to keep benchside.

Great Experience - Treasured Find
Overjoyed is what I felt when I unwrapped this book. The item was in much better condition than described. I had searched a long time for this used book and did not have high expectations. The book is like new! It contains very detailed information for fly tying. It is a book most craftsmen do not part with until it is well used. I will definitely treasure it. The vendor shipped quickly and well. Most importantly, the condition was not over exaggerated or misrepresented; Quite the opposite. Thank you.

A Superb Reference Work
This is not an introductory book nor is it a book that shows you how to tie any particular fly. It is, however, a book that should by beside every fly-tyers bench. It is a superb reference work that, with clear text and excellent photographs, demonstrates in detail virtually every technique for the preparation of materials, and every possible step, in the tying of any fly (for example, different techniques for tying in wings or tails). There have been advances in development of some materials (such as UV resins) and that should be borne in mind in reviewing the book, but that doesn't diminish the utility or completeness of the book. It's an outstanding and extremely helpful work.

Magnificent--does what videos cannot
I just got this, so I have only had the opportunity to review the table of contents, as well as a few select sections relevant to flies I've been tying. The volumes of online videos available today are where I receive about 95% of what I learn. I've found good videos to be better for me in almost every way over books. This book is the exception. It fills a void videos cannot. It walks you through processes videos usually quickly demonstrate simply by doing and showing. More than once, this book has showed me BETTER ways to tie flies I find in videos online. It dissects each process, shows it step by step, and explains everything. It's organized perfectly. This book was the extra detail needed for me to take tying to another level. I can't see myself ever growing out of this book. For a long time I shuttered away from buying it due to it's price, but it is worth every penny, and these authors deserve it for their hard work curating and presenting this material.

Book is great, but in bad shape.
The book is a great peace for every fly tier. It is sold at a fairly high price. Considering the high price it is unfortunate, that the book arrived in bad shape.

My first (and wrong) impression was poor. It is a big book with quality paper but the photographs seemed to be very small. It is very well structured and covers just about every fly tying task. It is not a book for absolute beginners. But it is very instructional. Each chapter starts with a review and each sub-topic a short discussion before going into the particular task in depth. At this point the photographs come into their own. They show in detail the stage being covered, with special effects like different coloured threads being used. They ARE of sufficient size to show all. The descriptions are very concise and every word is important. The text has many references to other parts of the book, rather than repeat itself, and these were all accurately linked, although this makes reading more difficult. I learned two ways of parachute hackling, and the book is made for adding to ones skill and knowledge. It covers many ideas which I hadn't thought about before. I consequently found it stimulating and browse it more and more. Recommended.

MfG
