Life changing!
Let me first say the Door Monkey is seriously life changing if you have little escape artists like I do. As a mom of 3, this product has been a staple in my household for about 7 years. My oldest (at 18 months old) figured out every baby-proofing device on the market. We had to find something that would keep him in his room overnight because he would get up in the middle of the night, sneak downstairs for a midnight snack, and in the morning I would find half-eaten butter sticks (he thought it was cheese) or full tubs of yogurt with a spoon sticking out hidden under the dining room table. We tried putting the lock on his door backwards, but since it was one he could open with a coin, he would pull pants out of his closet and use the zipper pull to unlock the door, he also used buttons on shirts and even pulled the tabs off furniture (the screw hole cover tabs) to pick the lock. We had to do contraband searches in his room to make sure he didn't hide objects that could unlock the doors. We finally found the door monkey and it was life changing. We absolutely love this little device! It is super easy to install and use! It keeps the door open just about an inch, so no pinched fingers and air can still circulate in and out of the room. Fast forward to child number 2, also an escape artist, we were totally prepared for his shenanigans with the door monkey. Fast forward to child number 3, this device is easy for my two older kids to operate on their doors to keep little sister out of their rooms, it keeps the cat out of her room, and we don't worry about pinched fingers or slamming doors. My boys like having control over being able to let themselves in and out of their rooms, with no worries about getting locked in a room like some of the devices out on the market. I will say, my two older boys figured out if they pushed on the door at just the right spot, it would pop the door open, but they were about 3 when they figured that out. I do have the door buddy to keep the dog out of the room the litter box is in, we like the door buddy, but the problem we have is that it is an adhesive fixture, which is why we only have 1 to allow the cat in her room while keeping kids and the dog out. We don't like adhesive products mainly because we live in military housing ... and anyone who has lived in military housing knows when you remove anything adhesive from the walls or doors, you will pull about 15 layers of paint off with it (even command strips). Since I don't want to get charged for those repairs and I'd rather not try to fix it myself, we really limit the number of adhesive products we use in our home(s). You do need to make sure you don't have a beveled or rounded door jam, the door monkey won't work on those (you will need the adapter, which wasn't available when I first found these). Sometimes the doors are too narrow for the door monkey to really stay tight on the door, but that's an easy fix with some rubber furniture pads cut down to size, slip that between the door and door monkey and it won't budge on you, and it won't leave a mark on the door. I highly recommend this product (I'm ordering more today since my littlest one is discovering she's tall enough to reach all the handles and she's exploring more of the house) to keep your little ones safe and to preserve your sanity (and let you get some much needed sleep)!

Pure genius
They seem complicated, but the execution is flawless and simple. These are the measures I use on all child locks and how the door monkey rates on them: Ease of installation: Instant. Ease of use: 3 years old and up when installed within reach. Damage to repair after use: non-existent. Effectiveness: 100% on interior doors with modern square jams. (May not work on older doors) Durability: remains to be seen. I would give extra stars for ingenuity if I could. These locks are the neatest thing since sliced bread. We use them to keep the baby out of an older child's room among other areas like bathrooms. It took only 2 minutes to explain to my 6 year old how to use it and he was thrilled that he could keep the baby out of his toys now. It is very easy to use so older kids have easy access to the places they need to go, but the baby shouldn't go, like bathrooms. I thought the baby would hate them, because he can see into the room, but not get in, but he accepted the locks and moved on. There is PEACE in our home once more! My only complaint has to be the price. Perhaps after they really catch on the manufacturers will give us a price break. I would buy them again though. In fact, I have already ordered a second batch. (And I can't wait till they get here! I have a few more doors to block,) I would like these to be easier for everyone to afford. I think they should be in every home with small children. They have the added benefit of being easily portable. Ours are going to grandmas house to limit the range of the baby while we visit. This is a very nice side benefit we have never experienced with any other child lock. If grandma wants to buy her own to use when babies visit, they install and uninstall easily, are pretty small and store flat. The house only needs to look baby proof when the baby is there. These are awesome for interior doors but not practical in all applications. I use metal flip lock door latches mounted up high for exterior doors and doors I want to remain closed. They are small white and cost about $2-3. It involves drilling holes into the door frame, which will have to be patched one day. They only work on doors that open out and have to be purposefully locked. These are very effective as long as we remember to lock them. They are also very durable, something that is necessary in our household. Examples are the front door, pantry and closets. For doors none of the children are supposed to get into for safety reasons, we have tried several things, and decided to just install standard household (exterior) keyed locks for security. This is for our medicine cabinet and other closets where dangerous items are stored. It was worth the extra expense to be certain that no one (children or others) would be able to get into those areas without our knowledge. UPDATE: By October 2014 only 2 of the 6 door monkeys I bought the end of 2013 and beginning of 2014 are still alive. I really wish they lasted better. We wish they would come up with a better version that has a better grip on the door and doesn't get cracked so easily. Either that, or make them much cheaper so it doesn't hurt so much when they get broken. This is an ingenious product, but it is not perfect. To the creators: You are the best! Can you do better? for cheaper?

Easy to install and open/close door- very safe!
Soo easy to install - just pop on and easily pop off. As long as you put it high enough for toddler not to reach, it’s super effective and also easy to open and close (even in the dark, from both sides of the door). I used it when visiting family since my toddler often wakes before me and likes to explore. Our family members house isn’t baby proofed and my kiddo is notorious for climbing over baby gates and I was worried about the stairs. This worked wonders, as the door doesn’t completely close so he didn’t feel “locked in” when he would accidentally close it during the day but kept him protected at night without me stressing about waking up when he did. We slept in the same room so it made it easier and safer when I would get up to use the restroom and was easy for me to use in the dark. It’s my new go-to for traveling! I love that it keeps the door open about 2 inches but doesn’t allow it to open any further. I think we are going to get them for the rooms in the house we don’t want our dogs or toddler in so that the doors don’t have to stay shut (better airflow). I love that these don’t have to be permanently attached like many other door mechanisms and take 30 seconds to read the installation instructions and 5 seconds to install. Well worth it for piece of mind knowing my kiddo was safe while we slept and whenever I got up in the night.

I thought this seemed like a universal fit but it doesn't fit on my door. My door frame is apparently too wide. Had to return.

Brilliant. Expensive but no installation needed which works well in a rented house. Can b moved quickly to other doors as needed. I use it to keep my senior cat in different spaces as needed. It leaves a gap that is just small enough for her to not squeeze through. I use mine on the top of my door so that my clothes don't get hooked up on it as I pass through, when the door is open. I can also move it closer to the hinges end of the door if I wanted a bigger gap for my cat to pass through but not anything bigger (child or dog)
