Are there any sharp edges on this opener that can cut fingers when reaching into the pocket?

No the opener does not have a knife edge or sharp edges

The one I have is 15mm wide, just over 1/2" wide that tapers narrower from the tip

Are they any good for opening boxes

As good as any none knife tool could be. Wouldn't use it to cut cardboard but it should tear through any tape thats not duck tape. I always carry a knife so it doesn't get used for that.
