Seven (4K Ultra HD + Digital)

I think it is in a sense definitive. Some people will say the additions, which most will not notice, were not all needed, and some of the refinements to grain might be a bit more than some hoped for, but this is not some James Cameron AI-fest with waxy faces and poorly added AI details. It's a clear step up from what we had before. I'll be honest, I barely noticed any of the additions. The only thing I did notice was some wobbly grain on the scenes they redid in the car ride up to the finale. I know Fincher hated those shots, and they've definitely used some tech there, but it also looks a lot nicer than before too. Grain was very fine throughout, and probably cleaned up, but overall I didn't notice much else. I thought the clouds at the end were done extremely well, and most of the other stuff just flies by. It looks gorgeous, or it looks as good as it can for the subject matter. You could tweak more or tweak a little less. In the end I think Fincher did this release very well overall, and I have very few complaints. He fixed a lot of stuff, but he didn't go into James Cameron territory to ruin his film. Think Blade Runner: The Final Cut rather than True Lies. Colors are amazing. Detail is definitely a decent step up from any previous bluray. Blacks have been lightened a touch, which I am thankful for as the previous bluray was absurdly dark. HDR is as it should be. There are some absolutely stunning scenes here that will stick in your mind. Seven remains a masterpiece in filmmaking and storytelling. They just don't make them like this anymore. An easy recommendation on 4K.

Se7en is certainly an acquired taste of a film. (No pun intended, Mr. Gluttony). Set in a city where it almost always seems to be rainy, the 4K nevertheless strips away a little of the grime of the blu-ray and offers a bit sharper detail throughout. Still one of the greatest and most re-watchable endings of any film I've seen in my 63 years.

John Doe was a Replicant from the Blade Runner universe. Just please hear me out here: - SEVEN takes place in a grim future and although not completely visioned, controlled by secret police (The Library Card FBI guy). -John Doe comes out of nowhere, is "highly intelligent and independently wealthy". Sounds like Tyrell's "Prodigal Son". -Stated that he was raised in a brutal Christian-type upbringing. This follows, in that when we get a look into Tyrell's bedroom, it's more of a dismal Catholic catacomb, complete with Judeo-Christian motifs. -John Doe is inherently aware of its own impending death. Seeing this as a cosmic cheat, John Doe (probably an early Nexus prototype and, like Ash from "Alien" a bit twitchy, was uncontrollable by Tyrell Corp. and let loose. This solved two potential problems for Tyrell Corp.: 1. Admitting failure in house would tank their stocks and 2. Enabling them to track their Nexus Prototype (John Doe) with regards to its mental and physical prowess in a hostile atmosphere (a common large city in the US). - John Doe's jealousy directed toward humans, a commonplace effect in later series Nexus, manifests itself in brutal killings and torture. These are traits (sociopathy coupled with a lack of humanity and empathy) which were intently furthered and aggressively cultivated to be instilled into certain Nexus models by the Tyrell Corporation. - The Nexus Prototype "John Doe" also reveals either a direct oversight by Tyrell, or merely a fun experiment: Average physical prowess. Later Nexus 6 Combat Models could tear a human to shreds, yet John Doe does not appear to possess these capabilities. The theory being that, if "John Doe" would retain superhuman strength, the display of such would be much too vulgar. - John Doe's targets were minions in its search for some sort of legacy. Distilling his hatred for all mankind forced John Doe into realizing it could not destroy all of humanity. Rather, certain subjects became targets to fulfill its role as being Beyond Human before its predetermined retirement.

One of my favorite movies. Excellent quality

Ornate cardboard multifold case proves difficult to use as disc arrived glued in place requiring I tear it up. Video quality is the best I've seen for this movie yet the disc froze up at 2 locations during playback using one of the finest 4K players available. Edit 7/22/25: attempted to return for an exchange and could only return for credit or some other film. Disappointed

El DIGIPACK viene imantado, y es complicado extraer el disco 4K UHD. Al intentarlo pueden rayarlo. Hacerlo con cuidado.

Most incompetent case design I've seen. I don't know who had the bright idea to make the packaging a slip case where you have to slide the disc horizontally out of two tightly glued pieces of cardstock. The only way to get the disc out is to sandwich the the disc between both fingers and pull, the catch is... it doesn't just gently slide out. It's absolutely jammed in there with a ton of friction. As soon as I pulled the disc out I flipped it over and yup... it scratched the disc. They were not deep scratches, light, but what is it going to look like after the 10th time pulling it out? Let's test it. I took a fresh blank CD I had with no scratches and slid the disc in and out of the slip case multiple times, checking the disc. It 100% scratches discs every time because of the overly tight sandwiched cardstock design. Needless to say, the disc is NOT going back in the case. This is the first time I've ever bought a movie where I quite literally cant use its own packaging to house the disc because it will actively destroy it every time you side the disc in and out. I can't even begin to understand why, how or who signed off on this designed... Like most things and the decline of value and quality over the past 10 years, I'm just going to attribute it to corner cutting and incompetence.

Positive: Excellent film, beautiful remaster in 4K Negative: The packaging is absolutely AWFUL - you can hardly get the disc out and when you do you've put your finger prints all over it. Blu Ray players are notoriously sensitive to finger prints. Even when it looked clean, the disc skipped. I want the manufacture to provide a new proper case to replace this piece of crap.

Love this movie, excellent 4k transfer the only negative point about this is the cardboard packaging that the discs needs to slide in

Great picture quality upgrade , and no Dolby Atmos but the but the DTS sound track is still brilliant , a great movie and not for the faint hearted , can be very graphic , but rated 18+ for a reason , must have for your 4K library

La película no ha perdido en 30 años el impacto de su narrativa, lo genuino de sus interpretaciones y, si acaso, la relevancia de sus temas han cobrado mayor peso. La remasterización del video es de gran calidad, incluso para un blu-ray que ya se veía bastante bien, las "mejoras" por i.a. son minúsculas y probablemente no las notarás salvo seas fan acérrimo de la película. El audio bajó de 7.1 canales a 5.1, es un tanto más potente y frontal pero con un rango ligeramente más reducido, aun así de gran calidad. El empaque es atractivo con artwork de escenas memorables, sin embargo, el disco viene incrustado dentro del cartón y esto es: 1. Un problema ya que se puede raspar con el tiempo e ir deteriorando al grado de causar problemas con la lectura, y 2. Es incómodo para sacarlo del cartón. Si la película no fuera una obra maestra, le quitaría una o dos estrellas por el empaque.

My movie was skipping throughout the middle and skips literally at the very last line before the credits. Completely obnoxious. I see no scratches or marks on the disc.
