Oats are said to be really good for your heart
This oat milk tastes great, and if the experts are right, helps my heart stay healthy. Oat milk is exactly what it sounds like: a dairy-free milk alternative that is made from oats. “At its purest and most basic form, oat milk is made by blending oats and water together—usually in the ratio of 1 cup of oats to ¾ cup of water—and straining it to create a liquid,” says Jim White, RDN, exercise physiologist, and owner of Jim White Fitness and Nutrition Studios in Virginia. Some brands fortify their oat milk with vitamins and minerals. It's also not uncommon to see added sugar, salt, preservatives, and fillers on the ingredients list. The health benefits of oat milk “From a nutrition perspective, oat milk is a healthy choice,” says Keri Gans MS, RDN and owner of Keri Gans Nutrition in New York City. One cup of Oatly Oat Milk -- which is a good baseline for comparison because it’s made only from oats, water, sea salt, and less than 2% of rapeseed oil and vitamin and other additives—has 120 calories, 5 grams total fat, 16 grams of carbs, 2 grams of fiber, 7 grams of sugar (from the oats, not added), and 3 grams protein. With 3 grams of protein per 8-ounce serving, oat milk is higher in protein than other popular unsweetened alternative milks, such as almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, and rice milk—all of which contain basically no protein. (Soy milk, pea protein milk, and dairy milk come out ahead, with 8 grams of protein per serving in each type.) Oat milk also has one of the highest heart-healthy fiber content of all milk products, says Gans, with more fiber than 1 cup of 1% cow milk, which has no fiber at all. Though 2 grams of fiber might not seem like much, the recommended daily amount of fiber for adult women is 25 grams, and every bit counts. “Fiber is important because it provides health benefits such as blood glucose regulation, binding of cholesterol, healthy bowel movements, and feeling of satiety,” adds White. Other benefits: Oat milk provides about one third of your recommended daily beta glucan intake; these are sugars that may help keep cholesterol levels in check. You'll also get about 25% of your daily recommended calcium intake per cup and about 20% of your recommended vitamin D intake if you opt for a fortified brand. Things to know about oat milk Oat milk tends to be higher in calories than other options. For example, oat milk contains 120 to 130 calories per serving compared to unsweetened almond milk’s 40, 1% cow’s milk’s 100, and unsweetened soy milk’s 80. And with 16 grams of carbs per serving, it has a higher carb content than a serving of those as well, which is worth noting if you eat keto or are on another low-carb diet. (To put oat milk’s 16 grams of carbs into perspective, a medium-size apple has 25 gram of carbs.) Oat milk is also a good alternative for people with lactose, nut, and gluten allergies. However, if you’re truly gluten-free, White recommends reading the brand's label. “As a general rule, oats are gluten-free. But the problem is that most oats are processed in factories with gluten. So if you have Celiac disease, check to see that the product was made with certified gluten-free oats,” he says. Oat milk's nutritional profile is reason enough to add it to your cart. But it also tastes good and is super versatile. The thicker-than-soy-milk texture makes it a good option for coffee, especially lattes. Highly recommended, best brand of oat milk
First, let me state that I am retired, so this is an unbiased opinion. Second, I am highly interested in nutrition and although I don't have an official degree, I have done a lot of research over the last thirty years on nutrition. This is by far the best brand of oat milk available, notable for its taste and texture. I especially love it as a hot beverage, both as hot chocolate and plain. Its mild sweet flavor (note, this is naturally sweet from the oats, it does not contain any added sugar) means I don't have to add sugar. I just use powdered cocoa, two dashes of salt, and the hot oat milk, for a rich, slightly sweet, chocolate taste. I also use this oat milk in recipes - in meatloaf for moisture, in gravy, and in baking. The best feature of this brand is its texture. Other oat milks are watery due to separation and even if you shake them vigorously, just don't have the smoothness and thicker texture of Pacific's brand. This is closer to real milk in thickness than other brands, which means it works better as a milk substitute in every recipe I've tried. Plus, check out the ingredients. This milk substitute has minimal ingredients, so it is much healthier for everyone and safer for those with food sensitivities. Pacific Foods was bought by the Campbell Soup Company. Let's all hope that Campbell doesn't change anything in its formulation. It's perfect as is! Notes added 10-15-20: The new nutrition labels are confusing. The 17 g of "added sugar" are not added sugar in my mind, since NO form of sugar (cane, fructose, dextrose, honey, maple syrup, agave) was added. Read the list of ingredients. The "added sugar" is the sugar found in the oats. My version of the oat milk product has only water, oats, oat bran, gellan gum, sea salt, tricalcium phosphate, and vitamin D as ingredients. But note that there are several versions of the oat milk, as well as other alternative milks. You can get an organic version, a regular version, and I just saw a reduced-sugar version of oat milk. You just have to read the labels and the ingredients lists carefully. I am specifically reviewing the organic original version. Hopefully this version hasn't been changed since the last time I bought a case of it.

Therapy is an Oat Milk Latte in a Starbucks Mug in the Middle of the Woods in a Pandemic
Wow this is SO good. Usually I buy refrigerated oat milk, but what with the pandemic and all, I thought I’d give the shelf stable variety a shot - and I’m glad I did. I just can’t dig powdered cow milk, or coconut milk, other than in curries. It is well presented, sturdy packaging and deliciously sweet. It makes me exceedingly happy that I’ll be able to have the natural sweetness of oat milk during the pandemic. No sugar added and doesn’t need it. Oat is a great nervous system regulator so much so that my herbalist included milky oat in my tincture when I moved home post divorce. Something lovely about oat. I also love it with chicory, well diluted. It makes an absolutely marvelous latte, 50/50. I put it in a reusable Starbucks mug that looks like the paper cup and you’d hardly know there’s a pandemic going on. There is solace in normalcy. I feel like I’m living in sunny LA again and not where I actually am, sheltered away in a cul de sac in the middle of the Vermont woods waiting for the curve to flatten and for the end of the world to end.
