Cold Wind (A Joe Pickett Novel)

One of CJ Box’s best. Couldn’t put this book down …read it one setting…so very very good and an eye opener on the wind farming operations

The Earl is murdered and Missy his wife is arrested. She asks Joe to find out the truth. All kinds of twists and turns and what was Earl really up to finally surfaces. Meanwhile, someone is still hunting Nate. They end up killing his Alisha instead of him. Now he goes on the offense to track them down. Two great storylines that ultimately join together in a real tragic messup. Keep the great stories coming!

A really interesting book. A great story and well written. Lots of intrigue with a couple of big surprises at the end. And a huge cliffhanger at the conclusion.

I seem to say/feel that with every consecutive book, but it's true. This yarn was fantastic. Actually not yarn, but a tapestry woven from CJ Box's encyclopedic knowledge of the territory, and a damned good plot. He doesn't need to preach, he craftily puts archetypes in the pivotal roles that sets the moral tone, with some healthy cynicism. LOVED THIS BOOK.

This was another murder mystery sort of. The whole story is an adventure in which you have alot to wade through. Buy this was not so easy to see who really was guilty. And the dead can't talk.

a bit more complex than usual, still with the good guys and the bad guys satisfyingly demarcated… And Joe didnt do anything stupid, just the ‘Yup’ s might be an ‘OK’ now and again, for variety.

C.J. Box's latest in the Joe Pickett series features some familiar characters, touches on some new political issues and includes a good amount of action. "Cold Wind" finds Fish and Game Warden Pickett's much detested mother-in-law, Missy, accused of murdering her wealthy fifth husband, Earl Alden. Everyone in the Wyoming town of Saddlestring, where the crime occurs, is ready to believe the worst of Missy Alden. The sheriff and local district attorney believe that they have more than enough evidence to convict her. Urged on by his distraught wife, Pickett jumps into the case along its margins to try and prove that his mother-in-law, while guilty of countless ethical and moral infractions, did not kill her husband. His informal investigation gradually turns up more and more evidence that the murder victim had a long line of enemies who hated him enough to do him in. Moving at a pretty good clip, the plot also includes a long look at the wind energy industry, the ins and outs of the construction of wind farms, and the possible fleecing of the national government as unscrupulous operators take advantage of federal subsidies for new energy sources--this being the trademark airing of local vs. federal issues that author Box works into most of his Wyoming-based novels. . Also a big part of the action in "Cold Wind" is renegade super hero, Nate Romanowski, who narrowly avoids an assassination attempt that kills his girlfriend and sets him on the road to bloody revenge. His place in the story eventually connects at the end of Joe Pickett's slow piecing together of a solution to the murder case. C.J. Box fans will not be disappointed with this clever and rapidly moving story that hits familiar touchstones and provides a satisfying conclusion. While you may not always agree with the political and social issues that Box drops into his novels, they reasonably represent the environment that the author writes about and are rarely uninteresting. This is a satisfying read that is hard to put down once started. Highly recommended.

As always a good read with a lot of twists and turns and some sadness as well I would highly recommend this book as well as the whole series

Fantastic series

Another immensely satisfying Joe Pickett novel from CJ Box. The cast of characters becomes more familiar and compelling with each book in the series. The mystery unfolds in the setting of the striking landscape of Wyoming, and in the context of the polarities between law-abiding citizens and those who are considered outlaws, environmentalists vs. ranchers/hunters (non-locals vs. locals), and transparency vs. secrecy.

Grand basic storyline and exciting in places as always but I could have done with the pages and pages describing the wind fraud and skimming and all that stuff! Boring was not a strong enough word! The rest was up to the standard expected of Mr Box though.

The first book in a very entertaining series

Ich bin ein Joe Pickett-Fan und wurde auch dieses mal nicht enttäuscht. Das Buch ist wie immer spannend und Joe hat wieder mal eine schwierige Aufgabe zu lösen, wie immer unterstützt von seiner Frau. Allerdings geht es dieses mal um seine Schwiegermutter. .. Ich kann das Buch allen empfehlen, denen auch die bisherigen Bücher dieser Serie gefallen haben.
