I am relatively new to natto - just started eating it in powdered form, and have not tried it fresh. The "string-y" slimy textures simply are repulsive to me - so, I ordered it in powder. I have to say, I love the taste of it, and have been adding about a teaspoon to a tablespoon of it to whatever I am eating for dinner - my one meal of the day. So far, it has been added to wild rice, pizza, vegetables, dips - just whatever I am eating. I am consuming it for my health, and don't know what effect it is having on THAT, but I have noticed that my hair and fingernails are growing at a phenomenal rate. Have to trim my bangs - on my almost 67-yr. old head - once or twice a week, and trim my fingernails at least once a week. It must be doing my body good!

I am Japanese and my grandma used to try to get me to eat the fresh kind as a kid. She used to eat a serving of it everyday. She ate it because of it's awesome health benefits. I used to refuse to eat it and tell her I didn't need to eat it because I'm young and I don't have any problems with my heart or arteries. I never liked it because of the yucky smell and flavor. I am now older and in my 50's. I have a bit of blockage in my arteries. I tried the powder kind at a market a few years ago and the sample they gave it was mixed with oatmeal... I now have a way I will eat it. Thank goodness there is natto powder and now I eat it often but only in my flavored oatmeal. I mix a serving of it in my apples and cinnamon oatmeal, maple brown sugar oatmeal, etc. I love it! There is no yucky smell or flavor.

I bought this 8 times from Amazon and twice I had to return it. I have been using Natto for years and know the taste, smell and the right consistency that it must possess. Day before yesterday I got another packet delivered and instantly knew something was wrong with it. Soybeans when fermented with Bacillus subtilis to make authentic Natto makes it slimy with a typical smell. If you put a small pinch in your mouth, it should feel slimy. If it doesn't and just tastes like mud/earth, it's not authentic or they did not let it ferment long enough. That's what happened to the last batch which is why I asked Amazon for a refund and they thankfully obliged. I will be placing another order today. Overall, the product is good but took off a star for lack of manufacturing QC.

I LOVE all natto products, there's not one I've tried at any Japanese or Korean store that I haven't liked, but this tastes & smells like sweaty feet! It's definitely misleading marketing as I feel like maybe the "fermentation" is off with this product. It tastes as if the soybeans were rotting instead of the traditional fermentation process. Sorry, but not worth the price at all. Want a refund.

Very happy I found this product. As others have noted, the taste is actually quite pleasant, if you use it correctly. What works best for me is to mix it with preferably thick, strong-flavored sauces (tomato sauces, mustards, cheese/vegan cheese sauces, soy/coconut aminos) or dry seasonings (eg furikake with nori and sesame). Condiments that have umami flavored components seem to work the best. The condiments don't just mask the natto taste, this natto powder actually improves and amplifies the flavor. It's especially great over rice. I think if you use a little bit with every meal, it will equal to a medicinal daily dose, which I believe is 1 - 2 tsp a day. If you rely on this product or are thinking about getting it, and are curious about real natto.... I would recommend you curb your curiousity and stay away, because it might make using this difficult to use by association. The "problem" with natto, unless you grew up with it, is not so much the flavor, but that it's accompanied by a wet dish rag smell, and a very challenging texture. If you start to associate the flavor of this product with real natto, you might have a harder time using this. Otherwise it's kind of amazing and delicious. Will update if I notice specific health effects.
