I had a USB 2 version of this that came with a wireless adapter years ago so when I needed a USB 3 extension I hunted out this style as I know it works well. The packaging was a plain box inside a standard Amazon box. Not much to get damaged here in transit anyway! Description states 5ft and that's exactly what you get. Nice heavy unit means this will stay put on your desk and doesn't skit around as you plug your flash drive etc. It gives full USB 3 speeds when used with compatible equipment. This is backwards compatible with USB 2. Even if your PC or laptop doesn't have USB 3, I'd recommend buying this as your next one is bound to have it and this will be future proof and not landfill. I bought this to extend the USB 3.0 port on the back of my desktop PC as I have none on the front. It comes sealed in a plastic zip up bag with plastic fill caps to protect the ports and connector. The first thing I noticed is the build quality was much better than I expected. The base is quite weighty and the cable is thick and very well shielded. Now the one thing I really wanted but is difficult to find on USB extensions is the ability to connect a portable USB powered external hard drive to it. I am delighted to say it works flawlessly! Most USB extension are not wired to provide all the power directly from the port but this one does. At nearly £10 it is quite expensive but for the quality I would say it's absolutely worth it. Very good purchase.

I bought this along with a normal cable which was about one third the price. I needed one for myself and another for my Father in Law. I gave hime the choice, but was hoping that he would go with the standard one as this one is a bit cooler. Performance wise, there's nothing to choose, but as he uses his for a hdd which is permanently connected, there seems little point in him having the Startech one (hooray!), so I got to keep it. It sits on the desk quite happily and the weight of it's 5-ft cable is not able to drag the socket off because of the plastic 'bulb', which appears to be slightly weighted. The only minus point is the cost, but I guess you are paying a bit for the name, and it is a very nice product. I certainly don't regret buying it one bit!

The base is wieghted to help it stay in one place as well as giving it the feeling of quality. i bought this as my USB3 ports are at the back of my PC, I usually have a micro USB3 and normal USB3 leads plugged into the back for external drives but having a USB3 thumb drive was going to be a bit awkward. This cable makes life easier as I can plug my external drives into it as well as my thumb drive without having to mess around at the back of the PC and it works at USB3 speeds, imagine that!

I have a laptop with a fingerprint reader, but at home I use it with separate monitors, keyboard and mouse. I like to keep the laptop closed, so then I cannot access the fingerprint reader. I bought this extension to use with a fingerprint reader. The cable seems sturdy. It works well as a USB3.0 extension for my memory sticks and external hard-drives. I have bought several Startech items over the years, never found a problem with quality.

On testing this by benchmarking a SSD USB3 drive and comparing it to connecting the drive directly into the same USB3 port i am alarmed to report that this cable is REALLY SLOW, when connected by the cable my write speed is reduced by 4 times, without the cable it is 500MBps, with the cable it is used the speed is reduced to only 120MBps I have repeated this test 5 times each on 2 laptops and 1 desktop and the results are the same i therefore do not recommend this products and i regret buying it

Not bad quality, but unfortunately just wouldn't work with my USB fingerprint reader. I bought this to have a convenient way to access my fingerprint reader on my desk. No matter which USB port I plugged it into, or which set of drivers I used, it just wouldn't recognise my USB fingerprint reader. I am using this instead for a wireless adaptor, and using an alternative port on my PC for my USB fingerprint reader.

Works exactly as I wanted and does away with reaching behind my PC to plug in a USB3 device. So far it has not given any issue with my USB3 SD card reader or USB3 hard disk that is powered by its cable. One thing I really like about it is that it sits on my desk out of the way of being bumped into, so I can leave my SD card reader plugged in. I already broke a memory card reader plugged in front of my PC due to accidentally bumping it with my knee.
