Beyond "Fear": Why child psychologists (and my 7yo godson) love this book
The Jesus Storybook Bible, Anglicised Edition by Sally Lloyd-Jones is a rare gem among Christian children’s books.✝️📚 While it is not a full-text Bible, it is a masterfully written collection of Bible stories that truly makes every narrative whisper His name. I recently bought this for my 7-year-old godson, and his reaction says it all: "It is one of my favourite books and it isn't even funny." This is high praise from a boy who usually only engages with humorous chapter books; it has captured his heart and mind in a way no other Bible storybook could. A New Perspective on Understanding ✨🎓 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all understanding and this children's Bible storybook helps a child understand this "fear"more concretely as a profound, reverent awe of a God who pursues us. While the author takes some artistic liberties with the Bible stories - as other reviewers have noted - she does so to emphasise God’s "Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love." ❤️ Crucially, she shifts the focus from a list of rules to a grand Gospel-centred rescue story. According to child psychologists, this emphasis on love rather than abstract fear is highly developmentally appropriate for 4-10 year old children, as it provides the emotional security needed to process complex faith concepts. It stands to reason that for children who have experienced any kind of trauma, this focus on a "Never Stopping Love" is doubly important. I have no idea if the author herself is trauma-informed, but her text definitely is; it offers a safe, healing, and consistent lens through which a child can view God's character. Why I Highly Recommend It: • Accessible Theology: It reframes complex biblical themes into a narrative of a "Brave Rescuer," making the core message of Scripture accessible to little ones, without being "twee." • Stunning Illustrations: 🎨🖌️Jago’s vibrant artwork perfectly complements the poetic, Anglicised text, making it a visually engaging Bible for toddlers and primary-aged children alike. • The Perfect Religious Gift: ✝️🎁 Because it connects the entire narrative into one cohesive arc, I highly recommend it as a meaningful infant baptism gift, Christening present, or child dedication gift. This is a beautiful, informative resource for family reading that helps children (and adults!) see that true understanding begins with knowing how much we are loved. It is easily one of the best Bible story collections available in the UK today for those wanting to share the heart of the Christian faith with children. ❤️✝️

I really love it
I have few Bible stories at home, but they overlooked lots of details in the story, this one is really different in a good way!! Very good explanation of each story, nice format, easy to read and my kids love reading them by themselves. This stories are written in a way that my kids feel that they are part of that story too. Once again very good written, detailed which leave my kids with good imagination of what the story is about, which leads us to a good Bible study with kids!!!

Beautifully told!
I came across this bible when babysitting for a friend's child, and have now bought it for my own children and as a gift for others. The stories are beautifully told - a little poetic licence is taken here and there, largely it adds to the story, but occasionally is not to my taste (eg 'Hello light' in the creation account). As with all children's bibles the stories have been chosen from the bible and therefore there is a lot missing - I find it frustating when teaching sunday school that often the story I want is not in any children's bible! Often I think that difficult stories have been tackled well - eg the story of Abraham being asked to sacrifice Isaac is often one which we gloss over with children, as many adults find it more difficult to comprehend than the children we are explaining it to, I think the author tells the story beautifully - I'm not an emotional person, but more than once have been choked up reading this! The author is sensitive to her readers, there are areas where she may be accused of glossing over - eg she tells us Joseph was imprisoned for something he didn't do - which I feel then leaves the parent to make a choice if and when to explain further and to what extent. Perhaps it does not dwell sufficiently on the sin aspect of the gospel, although it reiterates in almost every story that Jesus 'rescues' us, but again, that leaves a responsible parent to explain at will - we can't leave the whole job to a children's bible can we? It is regrettably rare to come across a children's bible as well told, which makes it clear that the whole bible is all about Jesus. I also own the Big Picture Story Bible and I love having the combination of the two as this minimises gaps. It could be made better by adding more stories please!

Beautiful
Beautiful and engaging for little ones. My daughter just started reading and goes back to this book every day. The illustrations are gorgeous, stories engaging and easy for young kids to follow but not oversimplified.

Brilliant
We are disturbed by how little God's grace is taught in churches, to be honest most Sunday School stuff is based around Old Testament stories and good behaviour - nothing wrong with either of course UNLESS you don't use them to point people to Jesus, which is something Sally Lloyd-Jones does brilliantly in this book. Some commentators have mentioned that this book papers over sin and disobedience but it deals brilliantly with the worst consequence of sin in the first story, namely how it separated us from God. Besides, this book isn't the Bible, it's a paraphrase for children; neither is it a replacement for godly parenting - it's a resource for godly parents to use - among others that discuss aspects like obedience. For my wife and I this book is a blessing. Children are saturated with a culture of performance from a young age, it's refreshing to have a book that simply deals with the incredible love and grace of our Father through His Son Jesus Christ. As Scripture says, its the kindness of God that leads us to repentance.

I am so excited about this. It just came in the mail from Amazon, and I have been bringing it with me everywhere I go like show-and-tell because I am that pumped about it. Here's the thing; I started thinking about my first-graders and how I'd love to simply read a chapter book to them from week to week rather than individual stories. That got me to wondering if such a thing existed: a chapter-book version of the Bible. In my search, I stumbled across The Jesus Storybook Bible, which is pretty close. I love the byline: "Every story whispers his name." Every story in the Bible (even the Old Testament ones) whisper the name of Jesus, even all of the best faerie-stories we read in books and see in movies echo Jesus' story. Listen to this excerpt from the introduction: read it out loud; it was meant to be read aloud: "No, the Bible isn't a book of rules, or a book of heroes. The Bible is most of all a Story. It's an adventure story about a young Hero who comes from a far country to win back his lost treasure. It's a love story about a brave Prince who leaves his palace, his throne -- everything -- to rescue the one he loves. It's like the most wonderful of fairy tales that has come true in real life! You see, the best thing about this Story is -- it's true. There are lots of stories in the Bible, but all the stories are telling one Big Story. The Story of how God loves his children and comes to rescue them. It takes the whole Bible to tell this Story. And at the center of the Story, there is a baby. Every Story in the Bible whispers his name. He is like the missing piece in a puzzle -- the piece that makes all the other pieces fit together, and suddenly you can see a beautiful picture. And this is no ordinary baby. This is the Child upon whom everything would depend. This is the Child who would one day -- but wait. Our Story starts where all good stories start. Right at the very beginning..." I'm impressed by the style and the quality of the writing and the art in this Bible. I'm impressed by the author's use of punctuation and parallelism and alliteration to make the story come to life. I'm impressed by the way she introduces ideas like God's "Never Stopping, Never Giving Up, Unbreaking, Always and Forever Love," ideas like Home (and ontology), Good and Evil, and the Creation-Fall-Redemption narrative. Sally Lloyd-Jones acknowledges Tim Keller for "giving [her this] vocabulary of faith." I'm impressed by that too. It sounds a bit high-faluting when it's described by how it has impressed me; but I promise you, it is not. It's a children's book that young children can read themselves and enjoy. But like any good children's literature, it's a good read for adults too. Literally every story in this Bible from Genesis to Revelation hints at Jesus, speaks to the Logos, the Center of God's Story (and ours). This children's Bible is creative; it's fresh; it's intellectually ingenuous. It's what we've been waiting for. The Jesus Storybook Bible isn't a replacement for your Children's NIV, but it's a good place to start, and a good supplement, even for your personal Bible reading as well as your children's.

Didn't you ever wonder, what's the interest in telling my children such stories as David and Goliath ? Or Jericho walls falling down ? What do they catch when they listen such tales ? A possible morale, some violence too... So what's the point ? Finally, this Bible invites us to go further, behind the 1st sight, the 1st listening... it shows Jesus behind each story, even of the old Testament ! It is really a great tool to help adults explain biblical stories to children giving them a real meaning, without loosing sight of the main point ever : Jesus. Drawings are just so kind too ! A precious, precious pearl.... My kids and myself just love it !
