Perfect for whatever land navigation you are going to be doing. I use this extensively and they are superb quality, well built and so easy to use.

Its great, it does the job perfectly, but unfortunately there was some slight scratch on the compass. The string on it is not those fancy ones, this one is rather ordinary, but it is by no means a poor quality string, its a ok string. Overall its a good compass.

Very simply put, I have had a little time with this compass and it does everything I could expect at a good value price. This is more than adequate and certainly adequate for the Moor. On that atrocious pun I will bow out. UPDATE: I have had this compass for three years now and have only had to replace it because I was a klutz and shut my car door on the edge of the baseplate on a Sunday evening after the walk! I ordered a replacement the next day and got it (no special delivery) that Thursday. Absolutely top service and the replacement is just as ideal. (The original still works well and is used back in school) This is a superb compass - you won't need another, unless you want to treat yourself to one of the fancy £50+ prismatic ones to make taking bearings a bit quicker! It has so many simple features done well: long baseplate, 1:25000 Romer markings on top, easy to use Right-to-Left scale for the Romer, internal orientation lines on the baseplate to help set bearings, magnifier, and .... Robust!!

Excellent modèle de C.O. ! Il serait même parfait avec le triangle départ des C.O. C'est absolument tout ce qu'il lui manque. Je recommande vivement. La balise des postes C.O. comporte une mire de centrage bien pratique pour centrer l'objectif précisément sur la carte. Je n'ai encore vu aucun autre modèle le proposer (sur cinq en ma possession...) La règle est suffisamment longue pour tracer un azimut. Les graduations des UTM sont présentes en 25 et 50/1000, ce qui permet facilement des reports de waypoint sur la carte sans se prendre la tête... Les patins antidérapants font aussi la différence, vraiment, même perdu dans la verte en position inconfortable, avec aussi les repères luminescents. Une boussole qui glisse pour un oui ou pour un non, ça peut devenir rageant dans certaines situations. Les azimut sont faciles à lire par transparence sur fond jaune/vert fluo suffisamment large. L'axe de rotation de la coupole est très doux, par rapport à un modèle d'entrée de gamme. Les visées sont meilleures. La coupole est suffisamment large sur les côtés, pas trop près de la règle, ce qui gênerait un traçage d'azimut. La loupe remplit son office parfaitement. Le prix est un peu élevé mais comparé à un modèle équivalent C.O, moins cher, celle-ci fait vraiment la différence.

North south reversed. So North red part of the needle actually points south. Also the north south line is off by about 5 degrees. Assume it must have gone through some wierd and wonderful magnetic machine when being posted and that this is not how it left the factory. Have had good experience in the past with Silva gear so hope this is just an isolated incident. Update. Had to purchase a return label to send back a defective item. Now after more than half a year and several non successful messages with support. I have never been refunded. So I’m out the purchase price plus the return costs which was 12 or 13 euro. Buy elsewhere

Der Silva Expedition 4 ist bereits lange Bestandteil des Silva Kompassprogramms. Und das völlig zu Recht. Das Nachfolgemodell hat zusätzliche Eigenschaften, wie ein Klinometer, eine semipermanente Deklinationskorrektur und eine vergrösserte Kapsel mit Gummierung. Trotzdem (und obwohl ich inzwischen die meisten Silva Modelle besitze und nutze) ist der Expedition 4 mein Lieblingsmodell geworden. Die Indexmarke ist als feine Linie direkt auf der Kompassrose/Gradskala aufgebracht und mit einer nachleuchtenden Fläche hinterlegt. Die Basisplatte ist ausreichend gross, um auch die Planzeiger für Karten 1:25.000,1:50.000 und 1:40.000 aufzudrucken, was die exakte Koordinatenbestimmung vereinfacht. Auf der Platte sind Parallaxelinien aufgebracht, die eine Kursbestimmung (gegenüber der dickeren Anlegekante) vereinfachen. Eine kleine Lupe ermöglicht das Erkennen auch kleinerer Kartendetails. Über die Qualität der Silva Kompasse braucht man sich keine Sorgen zu machen. Die Nadel in der ölgedämpften Kapsel schwingt in kurzer Zeit ein und ist saphirgelagert. Die verwendeten Materialien sind robust und gut verarbeitet. Das einzige, was ich mir wünsche, ist das die Leuchtmarkierung auf der Nadel stärker nachleutet. Gegenüber den anderen Markierungen ist diese nur sehr schwach ausgeführt, was aber ein generelles Silva Problem ist. Nebenbei: der Silva Produktservice ist einer der besten und kulantesten, die ich kenne! Nachtrag Dezember 2024: An der Bewertung hat sich nichts geändert. Wer diesen Kompass einmal im realen Einsatz sehen möchte, sollte sich die Tutorials zur Navigation mit Wayne Naylor auf dem Kanal "The Map Reading Company" auf YT anschauen.
