A great explanation of how jet engines work

Fantastic resource for engineering students and practicing aircraft engineers.

I'm not an aircraft engineer being a marine one instead. However, like many who have an interest in engineering it covers more than just my discipline - although to be fair ships do have gas turbines for some applications. Anyway, being a fan of all things engineering I wanted to know a little more about jet engines and of course who better than one of the greatest engineering firms in the history of human kind, Rolls Royce. If you are going to read up on something go to the best. And this book is simply superb. Really. It has a luscious feel to it with high quality paper, illustrations, photographs and writing all the way through. It has enough detail to stretch my mind which is not up there with turbine designers but is still compos mentus enough to understand a reasonable level of technical engineering. As an introduction and overall explanation of the jet engine to someone with some engineering background this book would be hard to beat. If you were s student at university then chances are you would be heading into more mathematical territory than this book covers but it would still be a superb general knowledge book on the subject. Overall, I can't recommend this book more highly for someone with an interest in jet engines.

This book is the foundation for engineering but I’m sure there are other books now which are more current.

I ordered this as it was on the reading list for one of my modules at University (MEng Aerospace Engineering). This book provides a great amount of detail into the complete design and operation of gas turbine engines, extremely content rich with lots of graphics at a price which is extremely good value for money, I would have bought this even if I didn't need it for my degree. The book is written in a way the average person could understand, though it lacks the engineering mathematics behind the design and some of the more advanced elements in aerodynamic interactions.

There is a newer version of this publication, I think, unless that owned by my son-in-law, who works for Rolls Royce, is an earlier version; but I think not. This edition does not contain such a detailed description of how the turbine blades are cooled by circulating air, nor the description of how the cooling galleries are formed in the blades. Even so, the information is detailed and interesting. Rolls Royce issue this book to all new employees,so I am told; and obviously they will have the latest version. Certainly the hard-back copies available second-hand are older editions and are probably being sold-on by former employees. The Russians will probably sell you the latest edition, if you were to write to them.

I lost my old copy from the '80s and someone sent me an Amazon voucher, so I put it to good use and bought the latest edition of this standard work. This is the Bible for Airframe and Engine Aircraft Technicians or jet engine aircraft pilots. This book describes in clear text and pictures how different designs of Jet Engines work. Not too simple and not too complicated.

I bought this as a supplement to my STEM subjects and after my work experience at Rolls-Royce. A very well written book with brilliant explanations for any keen enthusiast or student for aviation and aeronautics. A fantastic coffee table addition or addition to ones library and you will certainly learn a lot from it.
