Portable and useful modern update
Played with the real deal back in the 80's and this modernization is a well-rounded update, though NOT analog ---- it's a digital reproduction, but a darn good one. Fun to use and way cheaper than scouting for the original on the used market. Wish, like the rest of the Roland Boutique series, the outputs were ¼" instead instead of 3.5mm. Use with a portable battery bank via USB and save the headache of changing out AA batteries. Highly recommended for creating polka beats and ham sandwiches!

Great retro sound
small, tough, great sounding and once you get to know it, easy to program and play with on the fly. Its my favorite drum machine. I do wish it had a power in connector instead of just euro USB. But it can take batteries if the fragile USB connector breaks I will make my own connections.

Great Beats!
A little pricey but worth it... I heard stories growing up how amazing the 808 drum machine. I was a DJ as a hobby. Now I have some free time and I want to expand my music. Very simple.... view you tube for tutorial. Now I purchased the SE-02 to sync a keyboard with the TR-08.

Ignore the haters...
Ignore the haters!! Sure, it's not analog, but this thing is dope. And it runs on 4 AA batteries. And it's almost exactly like an 808 - except way smaller. Don't let these analog snobs sway you from buying this sick little machine. It's FUN, and that's what matters. The lack of individual "true" outs doesn't bug me at all. Make your drumtrack sound good on one track -- it's not hard. I highly doubt that Madlib outed each drum hit to separate tracks for Madvillainy. Embrace the limitations. If you want the 808 experience w/out spending $5K on an unstable secondhand unit, this is as close as you'll get. And this thing will be selling for $600 - $700 on the secondhand market when Roland stops making them. In short, ignore the haters. This little beatbox is sick -- and surely a future classic.

Cool for nostalgia but lacks functionality
I doubt I need to talk about how cool it is to have an 808... Only issue though: If you are wanting to use this to connect to Ableton specifically and record in audio, it doesn't work on windows because of the lack of native midi support. I even tried using third party software to combine the inputs but I'd have to give up using my preferred audio driver and switch to ASIO I went back and forth with Roland trying to get this figured out but they told me that this is the reason a lot of music producers prefer Mac. Since Mac's have native MIDI support, users are able to route all 10 midi channels into a single input and record as many of the channels as are active simultaneously on different Ableton channels. So overall, it's cool if you are alright with recording each sound individually on windows, this doesn't effect you but thought it would be good info to have before purchase!

but this one sounds pretty close and looks even better
A must have for every electronic music or 80's fan. Never had the original, but this one sounds pretty close and looks even better. A great addition to any studio. Had several drum machines over the years, so not having a full display it doesn't bother me, but many of my friends found it annoying. You should remember where you store your patterns as you cannot name anything, same as with the original. Great buy!

Oitstanding
I turned this on and could not figure out how to make a single sound. But - all the reviews lauded how amazing it was. I watched several you tube videos and the next thing you know I had a fairly complicated couple of bars of rhythm. Playing through a couple of studio monitors I had for my keyboards. I love this little machine and I expect to do really great thongs with it in recording.

Just about anybody can learn the basics of the Roland TR-08 drum machine. The functions are vast but operating this awesome little drum machine is easy. It should be easy to learn most of the functions with just a few short video tutorials online. There are plenty of storage segments and an A & B 16 beat drum line (each) on every storage number (12 total plus 4 fills) makes for a useful and easily accessible array of customizable patterns. I hooked up the rig via auxiliary jack to a bass guitar amp and it sounded great! This is an awesome jam tool and creative device. While it is easy to operate, it is complicated enough that you probably cannot play this very effectively at the same time as another instrument. If you pre-program your beats, dual instrument use may be possible but you may find you need a dedicated musician (or aspiring musician) to make the most of the TR-08 in context of a band. The rhythm always being perfect with a customizable exact tempo is a valuable aspect of the device. I can imagine that even young kids can figure this out and jam along with you. The unit itself has some weight and feels very well-built. Regardless of genre (I'm a rock/indie/alt guitar player), I think this is a great piece for creative fun and professional sounds. The easy-to-master user interface is a key selling point and the quality sound makes the TR-08 a great little instrument.

I love this thing. I had an 808 in the 80’s but sold it. Big mistake. It’s a lot smaller but still sounds great. Would recommend.
