Showgirls (BD) [Blu-ray]

Good movie, came well packaged, delivered with care..

First, a short review of the movie. If you haven't seen it, surely you've heard. This movie is so bad, it's good. Actually, it's so bad it's bad. But I love it anyway! What a lot of people don't know is that the acting, especially Elizabeth Berkeley's, was intentionally amped up. The director told them to overact. He thought that was the vibe that was needed for the film. Well, he was wrong. At least, if he wanted a hit. I think with the right acting and toned down just a tad (or more) he may have at least broke even. But the direction he set them in resulted in one of the most campy, over-the-top productions ever to make it to theaters. I don't know how any of them kept a straight face while saying their lines. Lots of female nudity, one male butt shot, very in-your-face sex scenes and something rather disgusting I wish they'd left out. It involves menstruation. I'll stop there. But it's a movie about Vegas, overindulgence, glitz and glam, and ambition. Can't beat that, right? If you're looking for an Oscar contender, look elsewhere. If u just wanna have fun & maybe laugh at the actors instead of with them, this is your movie. For me it's a must-own. My movie arrived with the 2015 Blu-ray case but the 2010 anniversary edition disc. I contacted Amazon & had a correct replacement in 2 days. No need to return the other one. Amazon is always top-notch!

Paul Verhoeven’s 1995 film “Showgirls” follows a script by Joe Eszterhas about Nomi Malone (Elizabeth Berkley), who hitchhikes to Las Vegas in the goal of becoming a dancer. She meets Molly Abrams (Gina Ravera), a costumer for a big Vegas act, who introducers her to Cristal Connors (Gina Gershon), the headliner. While out partying, Nomi meets James Smith (Glen Plummer), who wants to teach her to dance like a star, but she rebuffs his offer. Cristal and Zack Carey (Kyle MacLachlan) later visit her at the gentleman’s club where Nomi works, effectively auditioning her during a private dance. She finds herself drawn into a power struggle between the showgirl routine, which dresses up eroticism with art, and her work at a gentleman’s club, which James claims is honest because it doesn’t lie about its purpose. After a bad audition at Cristal’s club, James takes Nomi under his wing to teach her a routine he’s been developing. She eventually gets the big showgirl act, struggling to find herself. Sleezy on the surface, Verhoeven’s work has hidden depth as it focuses on the corrupting nature of show business and how quickly dreams can turn to nightmares. Like his other work, including “Starship Troopers” and “RoboCop,” the film itself uses satire and allegory to examine power – both political and economic. Nomi’s character arc resembles that of Eliza Doolittle, with various powerful men (and women) filling the Henry Higgins role.

Pelicula muy buena para palomitas

Llegó en buen estado y en el tiempo prometido, cuenta con idioma y subtítulos en español.

Showgirls fue una película muy ambiciosa, con la popularidad que traía Paul Verhoeven, MGM le dio el presupuesto así como luz verde para que hiciera una película clasificación NC-17. Pensaron que sería un éxito asegurado tipo ‘Basic Instinct’ pero les salió todo mal, la cinta no jalo audiencia y salió rápido de cines, quisieron re estrenarla como ‘midnight movie’ y tampoco funcionó, y si; que Striptease saliera al mismo tiempo no ayudó tampoco, Demi era popular y que accediera a salir ‘desnuda’ por 12.5 millones, fue suficiente promoción. Que en EU Striptease fue rated R (los menores podían ir acompañados de un adulto) y ShowGirls NC-17 (solo adultos), significó acceso limitado y también afectó la taquilla. Aquí en Mx todos corrieron a ver a Demi y ShowGirls pasó desapercibida, pero con el paso del tiempo, se volvió de culto. Showgirls es tan mala que es tan buena, pero mala malísima y pésima no lo es, hemos visto peores películas en cine. Siento que tanto críticos como audiencia se ensañaron con Showgirls, tanto así que no solo fue un mega fracaso, la vapulearon a tal grado que no acabo con la carrera de Paul Verhoeven por suerte, pero si acabo con la carrera de Elizabeth Berkley, quien fue duramente criticada, y la secuela que ya había sido planeada fue borrada totalmente del mapa. ¿Será porque el personaje era muy liberal para los 90’s? Si hubiera salido en estos años ¿habría tenido el mismo impacto? El Blu-ray es una re edición, la primera es portada amarilla y combo Blu-ray+Dvd y la re edición es portada rosa. Tiene audio y subtítulo en español.
