The College Panda's ACT Math: Advanced Guide and Workbook

Pros: 1.) Comprehensive - each and every topic thoroughly reviewed and explained. For each topic, detailed demonstrations of all the most common ACT problems on that topic follow, and the writer does a good job of providing multiple solution methods whenever possible so that students can try different approaches until they find the one they like best. 2.) Lots of practice - sufficient number of easy, medium, and hard level problems following every lesson. All questions have detailed explanations of the steps needed to reach the answer. 3.) Very close to the actual test - this may seem like a given, but it's truly surprising how few prep books accurately model the kinds of problems found on the actual exam. This book nails it. Cons: 1.) Some students may find the practice problems a bit too rigorous if math isn't their thing. I recommend pairing this book with Richard Cohn's ACT Math book if that's the case. The latter can give them a basic foundation, and then this book provides the heavy finish needed to score high. Nielson Phu's SAT and ACT Math books leave the competitors in the dust. As a professional SAT/ACT tutor, I can't recommend them enough.

The author has a great talent for simplifying concepts and then building on them. If you “master” everything in here (which, how it’s presented isn’t hard if you just work through it at the pace that makes it digestible for you) you will be 100% prepared for anything that could appear on ACT. Book is well laid-out. My daughter didn’t need / have time to do entire book - only the subsections she had trouble with on practice tests. Focusing on those was easy given this book. You still need to take as many ACT practice tests as you have time for - and then re study all the test questions - not just the ones you got wrong. These are free and online for download from ACT. She did very well on ACT - and I give this book a lot of the credit.

Worth the price and effort to get this! As my second child prepares to do the ACT, and prefers to do self-study vs. tutor, I wish I had found the "College Panda" series 2 years ago for my oldest child! These books offer encouragement, practical advice and smart studying! My son, who has done well on the PSAT with no study, has been obsessed with working through these Panda books! As a parent, I appreciate the book offering him quality study and holding his attention, while clearly pushing him to understand the ACT material better. The series seems to be highly engaging! I bought the ACT MATH, ENGLISH and more advanced ACT Math. All three are great!! I only wish there was a Science one too. THANK YOU Nielson for your work!

This book is an excellent resource for additional practice on the math part of the ACT. ACT Math prep books are really in short supply. Aside from working on actual test questions, the next best step for improving on the ACT is to shore up problem areas. This book allows students to obtain extra practice in those areas where they are having trouble. I do wish the book cross-referenced actual ACT questions to different sections of the book, as this would make practice more efficient - perhaps that will be the case in a follow up edition.

Before I bought this book I was scoring 28-30 on practice tests. I took it in June and got a 30. Then I got the book. Once I went through the whole book, I was consistently scoring over 30 and sometimes a 34 on practice. Then I took it in September and got a 31. I kinda struggled with time, it was really weird test and had subsets and vector angles. This book is very good and can probably get you over 30, but the answers explanations are sometimes hard to figure out.

I am a retired math teacher turned math tutor. This is the best book so far I have used including Barron, Kaplan, and Princeton Review. It is thorough and well thought out.

This book helped me go from a 20 in math to a 26. I only had a couple of days to study this book, so if I studied the whole book, my score could've been much higher. This book is great for you no matter where you are in math. I wasn't confused about anything when studying this book.

In the “About the Author “ in the beginning section of the book, the author states that he only did the SAT, not the ACT which has a different format despite similar content. Although you may find some good materials in the test (my kid took the ACT test today 7/15) it does not prepare you wholly for the test. I would highly recommend looking for other books that have the ACT formatting, content and more thorough explanations then what was provided in this cash grab of book. I would highly recommend using official ACT books (not Princeton review, just ACT or College Board) but definitely not this one! If you or your child struggles with Math significantly buying this book will only give reviews on concepts your child may or may not remember/know, and is NOT a proper study guide.
