Be warned, it is full of very disturbing and depressing situations, and is not a light read. However, that's the reality that we can't turn a blind eye on. Definitely made my own problems seem insignificant and petty. A lot of people in the first world don't understand the reasons behind illegal immigration, and this book gives a good insight into what pushes people to risk their lives and leave their families trying to make it across the border. It is not a book you can easily forget - it weighs heavy on your mind, but that's the effect it's supposed to have. Immigration is a heavy issue, and this book gives us a chance to understand it better. We can never know what it's like to be in those people's shoes, but books like this make all the issues more real and bring them to light. In addition to tackling the immigration issues, the book also has a great storyline that keeps you guessing. It's very hard to put it down. Review: A good read! - This book was selected for One Region, One Book in Southeastern Connecticut, where I used to live. That is how I became interested. The novel has a cross-generational appeal and speaks to issues of our day. It effectively combines family history with the controversial subject of immigration reform. It is full of poignant drama, class and racial tensions and a heartwarming story of hope amidst despair. I would recommend it without reservation, both as a good read and an appeal to practice the golden rule!!

No Hablo espanol, but you don't have to speak Spanish to enjoy this wonerful book.
I've never tried to review a book before, for fear of revealing any portion of the story. I hate spoiling any part of a good book. Yes, this is a good book to read. I read other reviews about the pace of the story, but I felt it could have been a little faster. The story was well written, but I do not speak Spanish well enough to understand some of the comments. The author will define some of the Spanish, but not most. Sadly for me I felt a little left out. Like the author was sharing a deeper meaning amongst her friends and I was not invited. That may be, but overall the book was a great read and I would recommend it.

Loved it!
I met this authour at a recent conference, and bought the book. I read it in one day. It was one of those books you can't put down, but don't want to end. She has a unique style that is spare yet so vivid that you are transported into the story. The story is so powerful that I cried and was rocked to my core. I bought several copies to give to friends. Ms. Grande is a gifted writer. This book is a must read!

I liked the fact that the chapters told you who you ...
This book really takes you on a journey. It was little confusing however due to the fact one character would go from present time, to past time, to not quite present time. I liked the fact that the chapters told you who you were reading about. Just when you think you got the book figured out there is another twist and you are left wondering. Interesting concept on immigration issues and the life the immigrant lives before deciding to come to America. I did enjoy the read and the journey.

Reyna Grande is an amazing writer -- and a gifted public speaker
Reyna Grande is an amazing writer -- and a gifted public speaker! She is young, but so very wise - and unusually personable. She is all about "giving back!" She raises money each Christmas to buy toys for the children who make their homes in the same impoverished village in which she grew up. She is brave and she is hopeful, even afrter surviving a childhood that could have easily destroyed her. Her novels are well worth reading also.
