Guitar and book at the same time is the way to consume this book.
This is a great book. The info is dense. i have a guitar with me when I read it. Since it's actually 3 books, they recommend starting at the beginning of each of the books. I got my 3 bookmarks and they are moving slowly as I progress. This book is working me in a good way. metal has it's own rules...here they are.

Awesome, solid instruction
Metal quickly became one of my mainstays after I got my first distortion pedal. I'm a bassist that's been playing guitar for only a year, so I already know a lot about theory and have an ear for metal, but this book does a superb job of breaking down musical ideas that sound metal-y so you can implement them in your playing. I already have metal speed and understanding on bass (like playing constant 1/8 notes at 260+), so I imagine my progress with this book is a little atypical (like a lot faster than the other reviewer who said that the tracks were too fast--you always have to build up to actual tempo, that's part of the fun). The author has a very well-developed sense of the genre and provides clear explanation of a large variety of topics; the tracks sound amazing and greatly add to the learning process. All in all, a great book! As a side note, I will mention that I am a Christian who doesn't like to listen to anything with objectionable lyrics, so it can be rather challenging for me to study a genre like metal just by listening to songs. The author provides lots of suggested listening because of his vast knowledge that I'm skipping because of this, but his excellent playing on the tracks makes up for my reluctance to go hear the artists he points out, so if this is your situation, know that this book is written very professionally, and you don't have to worry about being too "exposed" to anything indecent. Highly recommended. :)

The Good Book of Metal
I saw a bunch of these Fundamental Changes guitar books and, given the sheer amount, was admittedly skeptical. I took a chance on a compilation (this one) and am not disappointed. There is a decent amount of information here and a ton of exercises and examples. I especially like the references to specific pieces of music to illustrate the concepts in a practical musical application. I’ve been playing for a number of years but am always working my way through books like this to this day. I’ve even placed an order for a couple more of the series that focus on picking techniques and will likely get some of the exercise books as well.

Inspiring and Informative
This is another winner from Fundamental Changes. Rob Thorpe explains how to become a master at metal in a professional and informative way. The musical examples are great and the book is filled with recommendations for further listening. It's also filled with great advice, such as thinking of your phrasing in the way a singer does, allowing spaces in your solos for your melody to breathe. As with all Fundamental Changes offerings, the book comes with audio samples that really inspire and enhance the learning experience.

Will have you jamming in no time
Once you get the sample folder downloaded to your home computer and open the book it’s straight to rocking out. From power cords to cords I never thought of Learning, finger placement to conquer the licks and tricks they have in this all around metal book is great! There is so much knowledge and information from early metal to modern stuff that you can twist and turn and learn and just throw together into your own little jam out sections. What I tend to do when I get on something more difficult for my ability is just jam before continuing and throw in things I learned from previous lesson to make my own form of what I was taught. It’s really cool and I think you will enjoy this. I’ll definitely be buying more of these books!

Excellent book written over 460 pages and including over 360 audio examples available online. Split into 3 sections, rhythm, lead and progressive, this book guides you through numerous examples based on actual songs which helps get the point of each one across. Well worth the time going through this although no book is ever going to teach you everything, but it does cram a lot in for your money.

Très bonne compilation des techniques metal. C'est très complet, rythmiques, tapping, aller-retour, sweep picking, whammy bar, gammes. Seul bémol, le décalage de numérotation entre le livre et les pistes audios.

I bought this book and I loved the content. Very well argumented examples of all metal techniques from the Led Zeppelin/Deep Purple period to Dream Theater and Nu Metal era. Audio examples are great, too.
