Core Java: Advanced Features

The PUBLISHER should be sure this gaping hole is clear to the customer BEFORE purchase.Note: If you want Swing only, and are not interested in JavaFX, ignore this review.I bought this (AND volume I) months ago, to learn the latest Java and focus on the UI in detail (after learning basics). Now I reach UI sections and... SURPRISE... NO JavaFX? WHAT? (JavaFX has been around since early 2014.) The UI was a KEY reason for purchasing. Swing (the UI before JavaFX) is 35% of the book. SO much is intertwined in the UI, I just can't believe it lacks JavaFX. (If you want Swing, then this book is good.)NOTE: The next version (11) of Volume I still has only Swing. It does no good to get the later version (so far). So if you want JavaFX, You may want to look elsewhere.

I like the way Cay organizes the materials and provides clear explanations and history behind the various components of the Java libraries as he introduces them. Each chapter is designed to be self contained and can be studied out of order (more so in Volume II than Volume I). Each chapter represents a component of the programmers "toolkit" and various aspects of that component and introduced, discussed on a logical level followed by a code example that shows practical application.The code examples have been tested and work as advertised and are designed to illustrate the preceding discussion. They are easily modified by the learner to further explore the concept or add previous learnings - i.e. there is no code bloat, just what is necessary to illustrate the topic at hand. Both volumes assume the reader has some knowledge and competency in at least one other programming language. The object oriented concepts can be picked up while going through volume I. A very enjoyable book, I highly recommend it.

I am reading it now, after finishing the first volume.The author is a good teacher, he teaches a subject and gives an example how to implement it.Easy to learn Java through him.

The Core Java series is probably the only Java references you need. I have a LOT of programming books, and these two volumes stand out as some of the absolute best. A great mix of writing, code examples, and explanation. I use Java in most of my classes and whenever I need to understand a feature of Java better, these books are the first I turn to.

This is a good Textbook for intermediate java programmers looking to learn more.

This book is pretty complete, I only miss the fact that there isn't a JavaFX chapter but still it's pretty hard to find other book with so many subjects covered.

I have read volumes 1 and 2 of Core Java and I think it's one of the best tech books I have ever read. I have been programming in Java for more than 15 years, but like many professional software developers, we learn in the "trenches" and sometimes just do something without knowing why. I think I sometimes have specific needs for books, so I like to get the whole story on why things are done in certain ways. These books explain that. They are pedantic, yes, but thorough and if you appreciate that kind of book, then these are for you.

Java has moved on since the last book I bought, this book covers everything in an excellent way. Thoroughly recommended.

Thorough and comprehensive. I'll be working my way through this book after I have completed Vol. I. I'm looking forward to hard work and fun. I previously bought the 9th edition of this book. I'm glad the author has created the 10th edition for Java SE 8.

This is not an easy book to read but if you have a medium programming level in Java this will definitely help you increase your knowledge and skill with the language

The book delivered to me was in bad shape (It wasn't used thought) , but in a bad exterior condition.
