The Designer's Guide to the Cortex-M Processor Family: A Tutorial Approach 2nd Edition

I find this book to be a practicle, and well written, introduction to the CORTEX M3/M4. In my case, I have the older Keil MCBSTM32, which is based on the STMicro STM32103RBT6 microcontroller and ended up purchaseing both the first and 2nd editions of this book. Seems expensive, but the first edition had a great intoduction to Keil MDK_v4, which is now the Keil MDK_v5; both can bee downloaded for free on the Keil web site (described in the book) in a code sied limited edition. I am a purest and wanted to see the history of how the keil compiler is used to get a better idea of what the option do and why they exists. I ended up purchaseing the Keil annual subscription so I can use the code commercially, and I do not regret it. It is a good IDE. Secondly, it used the ARM assembler. That's imporatant for me because I also own a commercial version of the Rowley and Associates Crossworks for ARM. I want to be well versed in both ARM and GNU assembly language. Most will probably not be in this situation and will most likely benifit from the second edition of the book. In the second edition, the STMicro ST32F7 Discovery book is used. The second edition ahs the same flow as the first with the projects updated for the Keil MDK V5 and ST32F7 Discovery board. I use severl variants of ST, TI, NXP, and ATMEL/Microchip ARM CORTEX devices. This book would appeal to those that use STMicro. Those that use the other variants (ie TI, NXP, etc) may not get as much value, but I do not want to discourage; just be aware that this book is geared towards ST and Keil. That said, it does a straight forwad job of describing the AMR CORTEX M3/M4 architecture with good examples, so you may be able to adapt the examples to your environment (ie no-keil, or even Keil with a difference SoC vender)? In short, your mileage may vary if not using ST/Keil.Note that in the first edition, the Author mentions "Hardware Examples". These do not seem to exist on the Elseivier web site. I was able to get by without them, but would have like to have them none-the-less wo see if there is anything I am missing.

Das Buch gibt einen ersten Überblick über die Cortex-M Prozessor Familie, allerdings bleibt es in manchen Punkten recht oberflächlich. Die Beispiele /Tutorials sind im Wesentlichen Klick-Anleitungen für das Keil MDK (Microcontroller Development Kit), und damit nicht sehr hilfreich für das Verständnis, wenn man eine andere Entwicklungsumgebung nutzt.Wenn man detaillierte Informationen über die Cortex-M Microcntroller sucht, dann ist man meiner Ansicht nach bei diesem Buch falsch. Da wird man auf der Webseite von ARM und in den dort verfügbaren Dokumenten eher fündig - muss sich dann natürlich aber auch mit den sehr technischen Ausführungen auseinandersetzen. Zusätzlich sollte man auch immer das jeweilige Reference Manual des Controllerherstellers parat haben, da nicht alle von ARM spezifizierten Features eines Controllerkerns immer umgesetzt werden.

Everything about ARM Cortex is available in this book, probably this is the Cortex bible. Totally recommended for any hardware/software developer.
