前作 "The Queen of the Damned" でAkashaから強大な力を受け継ぎ、事実上最強のVampireとなったLestatの前に現れたのは、Godと拮抗する力を持つと豪語するDevilであるMemnoch。Memnochはarchangel（大天使）の１人であり、「神と戦っていて、まさに勝利しようとしている。Lestatの力を借りて決着を付けたい」という甘い誘いをかけてきます。Memnochに連れられて天界で天国と地獄を垣間見るLestatの決断やいかに、という書き出しで始まります。この本ではVampireの強大な力を発揮するシーンはほとんどなく、少し物足りない気もしますが、Devilに頼りにされることが意味するものは真の強大な力を持つ存在の証明でもあり、Vampireファンにとっては、また別の面でたまらない魅力の側面でもあります。 さらにVampireワールドにのめり込むことになる作品です。ここまで来れば引き返!すことなど考えられず、Vampireシリーズをすべて順に読んでいくしかありません。あきらめましょう。

This is one my favourite book of the series it's so well written and just takes so with it while reading. I didn't perceive this as a religious propaganda despite of many critics, rather it was still in the line of narrative you could feel the struggle and emotions lestat was experiencing throughout the book
