I’ve bought this as a gift and the orange ball is nearly impossible to squeeze. Is it meant to be that rock hard or do I have a defective one?

The orange ball is the hardest in the progression of the balls. You need to work your way up to that one. it is not defective.

My mom has severe arthritis in her hands, grip strength and being able to straighten her fingers are the main issue. Will using these help?

Hi, it's Dr. Zachary. Consult your health care professional, but yes, Handmaster Plus is used by many who have arthritis. Once you get the okay from your Dr., here's how to proceed: 1) ensure you can open and close your hand fully (without the product on your hand) without pain. Do this for one minute. If you cannot do this comfortably, you are not ready to start using resistance. Once you can open and close your hand for 1 minute comfortably, you can start with the Handmaster Plus - Soft strength (blue ball, yellow cord). Again always follow the advise of your health care professional who knows your case specifically. Best, Terry.

If it becomes easy to use the medium ball for opening the hand does that mean I can move on

That's really a Q for a Physical Therapist or other professional. I'm simply a person who has a set of these on the recommendation of a Health Care Pro, and used them with good results. That being said, my suggestion is to try the next ball SLOWLY for just a few reps, say, 3 or 4 at most, and see how you feel afterwards. Slow progress helps reduce the chance of pulling or tearing something that wasn't ready for too much stress.

How many times a day? How many of the different excercises everytime you use it? ....tennis elbow ,dont want to overdo it

The box shows you 3 exercises. How many times a day depends on your PT/DR prescribes. I use it for tennis & golfers.
