Top grade dry lube for the Desert.
I used to use Finishline Dry for all my riding out in the Desert. Used to have to reapply after every ride. This stuff is a different league, done 4 rides over 100km and no crunching, grinding still smooth as. It’s a touch more ££ but absolutely worth it in my book.

I recently switched my mountain bike from a wet lube to this Muc-Off C3 Ceramic Dry Lube, and after some trial and error, I found the perfect procedure to ensure a clean drivetrain and optimal performance. Here’s how I do it: Step 1: Initial Degreasing I start by using the Park Tool CG-2.4 chain cleaning system, but instead of Park’s CB-4 degreaser, I fill it with RunAway Bike Bio Degreaser — it’s cheaper but works just as well. I run the drivetrain through the apparatus first to mechanically agitate and remove large grime and old lube. This step alone removes the bulk of the mess and makes the next cleaning steps much easier. Step 2: Deep Cleaning Next, I rinse off all the first degreaser completely with a hose. Then I apply Silca Ultimate Step 1 Drivetrain & Brake Degreaser with a brush to agitate the chain, cassette, and chainring(s). I let it sit for 3–5 minutes — no longer, as it’s powerful — then rinse thoroughly. Step 3: Optional Full Bike Cleaning Now I optionally spray the entire bike (avoiding the drivetrain) with Muc-Off Nano Cleaner. I use a gentle brush, sponge, or even a new toilet bowl cleaner to remove dirt and dust from the frame, wheels, and components. Important: I avoid spraying the drivetrain directly because the biodegradable surfactants in the Nano Cleaner can leave a thin residue that prevents Muc-Off C3 Dry Lube from adhering properly. Step 4: Drying I rinse the whole bike and then dry completely with shop towels or equivalent. I also wear protective eyewear and disposable gloves during the process — it keeps me safe and clean. Step 5: Applying the Dry Lube Once the drivetrain is completely dry, I apply the C3 Ceramic Dry Lube. Dryness is crucial here — unlike wet lubes, dry lube needs a fully dry surface to bond properly. I apply it to the bottom of the chain on top of the rollers, starting and ending with the chain link to avoid over-applying. After letting it sit for 3-4 hours, I wipe off any excess while pedaling backwards. Optional Tip: My bike shop recommends lubricating the jockey wheels as well — just be sure to wipe off excess to prevent fling-off and dirt buildup. Bottom line: This lube is excellent once applied correctly. Following this workflow ensures a smooth, quiet drivetrain, improved efficiency, and long-lasting dry lubrication. It’s a bit more involved than simply spraying on lube, but the results are well worth it.
