Can i use this 2nd gen cable with the 1st gen earpiece?

Yes, they are compatible with both the 1st and 2nd generation M6 PRO.

Is the mic side exclusively the right side or can either cable connector be used for the left or right?

The cables are labeled L and R, but each can be plugged into either monitor. The plug has an indent, but it can still plug in 180 degrees from the intended position, so you can plug the right cable into the left monitor and put it in backwards so the the cable curves the correct direction. I just did it and it plays fine with the cables reversed. I just assume that your left and right audio feeds would be switched, but otherwise it seems to work.

Will this have a volume control on the remote? If so, is it a slide control like the Gen 1 cable?

The 2nd generation headset cable does not have a volume control. However, it does have all other functions like the generation 1 cable, just the volume control slider is no longer apart of the design.
