It all started for me a little over 15 years ago with an old White's 5900. My grandmother lost a ring somewhere in her massive, poorly maintained yard, and it was up to me (and a second hand 5900) to find it. Long story short, I did just that - and found out that I rather enjoyed hunting in the process. Over the years, I went through many more metal detectors before settling on the Time Ranger some time in 2010. My previously favorite MD was the Garrett Ace 250 (which my wife currently uses - used actually). Hunting is a great hobby, and will pay for itself within a few years (or much sooner if you are lucky). I spent a little over $400 on my Time Ranger, and it paid for itself on the third day - when I dug up a very nice ring (while hunting a popular beach). I went back there countless times over the years, and while I didn't get any more major finds, I do quite often get silver and gold rings, as well as massive amounts of coin. This alone should tell you how great the TR is, since that beach is hunted by dozens of other enthusiasts. A few years ago I got my wife into the hobby and she has been using my old Ace 250. For a while we would go out a few times a week, but that came to an end when hunting made a comeback. These past few years everyone seems to be walking around with a metal detector, looking for lost treasures. While we no longer have time to hunt every week, we make it a point to go out at least once a month, and try our luck. I sometimes follow behind her (if the area looks promising), and since the TR has a greater depth range than the A250, often find things she missed. My deepest find was a coin that was almost 14 inches BELOW ground. Her Ace 250 swept right over it (literally), but the TR had no issue finding it. It was so deep that I almost gave up on it after digging out about 12 inches, but my pinpointer confirmed something, and I kept going. Now I know it's not fair to compare the Ace 250 ($200 dollar detector), vs the Time Ranger (400 dollar detector), but since the TR can now be bought for under $170, it falls in the same price range as the Ace! Both are great detectors, but the TR comes with more bells, whistles, and options. My cousin actually bought the 350 model a few years back and I often find good stuff he missed, while he has no such luck if I lead (although I do try to leave him plenty of junk). I also sometimes compete in sponsored hunts, where I usually end up in the top 10. I never actually took first place, that is usually "reserved" for people with thousand dollar machines and a lot more experience than me (but I did come in fourth twice so far, and fifth quite a few times as well - beating out some very expensive MD's). But enough ranting, let me tell you why you should buy this metal detector. First of all, the price is outstanding. Dollar for dollar, you can't beat this machine unless you move up to the Garrett AT Pro. I will be the first to admit, that machine is technically better - but the price difference is huge. If you have $600 to spend on the AT Pro, by all means go with that. Eventually I will upgrade to the ATP as well, but only when it falls into the $400 (or below) range. Second - as long as you know how to ground balance your unit, this thing will detect pretty much anything you want it to. Third - it is waterproof. Just don't submerse it too far and get water on the circuits/display enclosure. Having said that, their support is nice enough to repair your system fairly cheap and extremely fast if you do get it wet. Fourth - You can actually exclude certain items and metals from being found with a simple press of a button! Careful when using this feature though, since I found a LOT of jewelry that read out as pull tabs. Fifth - If you have the patience to learn this wonderful detector - it will last you a life time and get you a lot of great finds. I actually just bought another one for my wife, and sold her Ace 250 on Craigslist. To sum it up, this is a great detector at a great price. I hunted rocky mountains, sandy beaches, and everything in between. Never had an issue with the detection rate or quality. Salt water can get a little tricky, but adjusting the sensitivity quickly fixed the problem. So go ahead and buy confidently. For under $170, you will NOT buy a better metal detector at the moment.

A wonderful detector at a great price! I am so glad I purchased this detector. I have another BH but when I saw the price of this, I had to order it. I wanted a detector that gave you the depth of the target, and this detector does this very well. I hunt a tot lots often in the Summer because it is easy money without a lot of work during the Summer months. Now that it is cooler out, I have taken the detector into the parks searching for the older coins. No silver yet but a couple of Wheaties buried, one buried at about 8 inches. The machine picked it up clearly, got the 1c to 10c correct and the depth. I detect mostly in P3 to exclude zinc and most garbage and dig very few garbage items. I am taking the detector to an old ghost town in a few weeks. I will be searching for a coin cache so will need to better understand the all metal mode. I haven't used that mode yet. I also haven't used "sniff" or "blanker" because I am not sure how to use these setting yet. The machine is great for beginners because you can unpack, take 5 minutes to put together, turn it on and be in your yard and detecting. It also has advanced features that allow you to grow with the machine. I am very happy with the purchase. The price is great and so is the machine. Happy treasure hunting.

I am a total newbie detectorist and this is my first detector, so bear that in mind. Also, I haven't had it very long so I cannot attest to its durability. But here are my impressions so far: 1. This detector has a lot of sophisticated settings ("SNIFF" mode, automatic and manual ground balancing, fully programmable target discrimination mode, etc.) as well as a simple "turn on and go" setting. It does just about everything you'd want/need from a detector, except for 1 thing (See #2). 2. Unfortunately, this detector does not do well in salt water settings. Even the manual states that. It's a shame, because it does have an automatic as well as a manual ground balancing setting. However, it does not work in salt water. (You CAN use it on dry sand on East Coast beaches, but anything down by the water or even the hard wet sand or shallow pools of water located amidst the soft sand areas will throw it into a tizzy. And black highly mineralized sand will also give this machine fits.) 3. This detector is LIGHT. I just ordered/received a Garrett AT Pro so I could have a detector that works at the beach (See #2). And compared to other waterproof "beach" detectors (Minelab Excalibur ii, Fisher CZ-21) the AT Pro is lighter (3.5 lbs vs 5 lbs). But when comparing the AT Pro to the BH TIMERANGER, there's simply no comparison. The TIMERANGER feels almost like swinging a detector with just a stem and a coil. 4. The inclusion of the 4" "gold" coil is a definite bonus. 5. The price of the BH TIMERANGER is a STEAL. 6. The BH TIMERANGER uses a standard 1/4" stereo headphone jack, not a proprietary jack that requires proprietary headphones and/or a proprietary headphone adapter. The positioning of the jack is also convenient. It's easy to access and the headphone cord doesn't get in the way. (Contrast that with the AT Pro and it's night and day. The AT Pro uses a proprietary jack awkwardly located that requires you to somewhat blindly line up a pin and a hole in order to insert it properly. And if you don't line it up properly you'll damage the pin.) On the down side, there is no headphone volume adjustment on the TIMERANGER, so you'll need headphones that have a built-in volume adjuster because the unaltered sound is very loud. Fortunately, Koss makes a really nice, comfortable, inexpensive model with a built in volume adjuster -- the Koss KTXPRO1 Titanium headphones. Koss KTXPRO1 Titanium Portable Headphones with Volume Control . 7. The BH TIMERANGER only uses 2 9-volt batteries and seems to have decent battery life. There's also a very functional battery indicator that lets you know when the batteries are running down. One minor quibble. For some reason this detector comes with the slots for a strap to enhance the arm rest, but no strap. Fortunately, Garrett makes a strap for their detectors that fits this one perfectly: Garrett Armrest Strap for AT Pro, Gold and Ace 150, 250 and 350 - 9851300 . It'll only set you back around $6, but it's annoying to have to pay for something that should have been included with the detector in the first place.

Was great for about a hour and then it quit working, reset all settings, set so it wouldnt pick up iron and we would try again and nope. We were always getting a constant reading around 59-70 no matter what we did. Just broken expensive garbage.

My 10 year old daughter and 30 year old brother bought this together to "treasure hunt". It's sensitive (but not overly) and it definitely has been keeping them busy. So far they've found just old tools and bolts, but they are having so much fun with it. Arrived two days after it shipped out. Very happy!
