Amazing Grace

This album is timeless, powerful, poignant and very very signifigant in the evolution of gospel! What you are witnessing on this album is not just soulful and brilliant singing in the true old school gospel tradition, but also a changing of the guard!---Mahalia Jackson, the reigning and (in my book) the eternal queen of gospel, passed away right before this album was released in January of 1972, and Aretha, the heir apparent and reigning queen of soul sang at her funeral. I would call that a passing of the baton. If that weren't enough, both her mentor in gospel singing, the legendary Clara Ward and Sister Rosetta Tharpe both passed away in 1973. Aretha also sang at Clara Ward's funeral. So if that wasn't the flame being passed on and kept, I don't know what is! And keep the flame she did!---What you have in this amazing 2-CD set is some soul-stirring, heaven-inspired, transcendant singing by Aretha accompanied by her other mentor, the late great and equally revolutionary Rev. Many music critics agree this is probably one of the finest gospel albums ever recorded. This live, two-CD set is Aretha's crowning homage to her gospel roots and shows her dynamic vocal range. Whether handling material from secular-inspired artists like Carole King (You've Got a Friend) and Marvin Gaye (Wholly Holy), to more traditional songs like What a Friend We Have in Jesus, How I Got Over, and searing arrangements of gospel classics like Mary Don't You Weep and Never Grow Old, and the10-minute title track will enthrall and move you like no other singer can. Produced by music industry veterans Jerry Wexler and Arif Mardin the 14 tracks on this CD were recorded live at the New Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angles, California. The post-mixing and editing captures every audience nuance and there's an excellent quality to the balancing between Aretha's vocals, accompanying band, background choir, and even the remarks between songs by her father Rev. C.L. Franklin and church pastor, the stalwart Rev. James Cleveland. Whether you are a fan of gospel music or not I urge you to own this amazing recording simply because it's just another example of Aretha Franklin at her finest!

Nice sound quality. plays well and doesn't skip.

I love this album. It's a must have for any music collector. I love the Amazon music club I belong to. A new record a month and for the most part, things have been great, but this is the 2nd time I have received this album through the club. I did keep it to give it to a family member who loves Aretha and I'm sure he will love it. Hopefully I will get non duplicated albums next time. But when it comes to Aretha and this album, it sounds beautiful, it's a classic and it is Aretha along with her family. Do yourself a favor and treat yourself. You won' t be disappointed.

This is a collection of gospel songs sung by a young Aretha Franklin and the Southern California Gospel Choir. It is as close to perfection as I can imagine, especially the first CD of the two CD set.

Wonderful cd

This recording is SOOOOOOOO good! It’s easy to just get lost in the music and enjoy the journey. It’s one of the few times when the performance overwhelms any consideration of technical “audio quality” and “soundstage” and other audiophile considerations. But it’s also true that the audio quality is indeed quite good. The accompanying musicians are as good as you’d expect from Aretha — a few of them were even on the iconic and also live recording “Aretha at Fillmore”. Sit and listen — LOUDLY. And enjoy....

I am especially grateful to have this particular work by Ms. Franklin. This is my first recollection of her recording a gospel album, but not her last. Anyone who really wants to understand her musical chops/roots needs to listen to her Amazing Grace work. I also enjoy all of the technical aspects (engineer), arrangements, musicians and the accompanying choir. I always had a large collection of her work in my library. Didn't purchase Amazing Grace when it was released. Over the years, I meant to, but put it off. When she made her transition, I made sure that I finally did so. RIP Ms. Franklin.

Musica espiritual de las Iglesias afroamericanas de los años 30. Musicalmente (fuera connotaciones religiosas) es una de las maravillas del ser humano. Una voz fuera de lo normal, es una mujer descomunal,un milagro. Domina como nadie el jazz vocal, blues y sobre todo el gospel, y para muestra, esta obra maestra. La calidad del vinilo es de buena calidad,180gr; el sonido es bueno. La carpeta Gaterfol es de gran calidad, con muchas fotografías y mucha información extra. Aretha es una de las grandes de todos los tiempos. Gracias Aretha.

Esse registro é um marco na vida de Aretha. Difícil de sem encontrar, ainda mais sendo novo. Independente da sua religião, ess CD de gospel é um item que não pode faltar na coleção se quem curte Aretha Franklin! Mais que recomendo!
