Not an exciting recording.
He seems really tentative. I didn't much enjoy it.

Just a raw rocker.
I'm sure not many know about Ireland's Rory Gallagher here in the U.S. I remember the first time a friend introduced me to his music way back in the mid 1970's. He knew my music taste pretty well and suggested I give him a listen. I did, and at first I really didn't love him. Okay, he can rock with the best of the guitar heroes. And his slower blues numbers were great with searing intricate guitar solos. At that time I was into groups like Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top, Allman Brothers, etc. and their sounds seemed much more sophisticated. But as the years pasted I began to like his live sound more because it reminded me of how I sounded when I was "in the garage" trying to find my own tone (you see, I'm a guitarist also). So that became the appeal of Rory Gallagher to me - it was like a "garage band" sound only very professionally performed. And now on CD, it's a real treat to hear his "sound" very clearly reproduced again. If you like good guitar hero rock, I think you will be impressed with this live - yes, very raw - performance.

Live Gallagher Sizzles!
I had an earlier version of this CD, a combination of two LPs from the 70s. This version is the entire original album with several songs restored, abridged versions of songs expanded to their original length, and bonus tracks. Gallagher's song-writing and studio albums are good, but can't hold a candle to his live performances. He and the audience feed off each other and his technique and passion are astounding. On this CD, he plays both acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, and harmonic, frequently with the harp and a stringed instrument together. It's an amazing performance, and this expanded version makes it even more exciting.

Fire up the way back machine Mr. Peabody ! Rory was the opening act at a four band show at the Commack Arena back in 1972, this was the first concert I ever attended and I was blown away by this guy ! He easily stole the show and I eventually bought most every album he made. I still get goose bumps every time I hear him play. Rest In Peace Rory, you passed way too soon !

The best electric (and acoustic) old world guitar player of the 20th Century wasn't English, he was Irish. Unlike the Brits, he turned down pop rock stardom and millions. His blues are delightfully non-commercial.
