Time-lapse Photography: A Complete Introduction to Shooting, Processing and Rendering Time-lapse Movies with a DSLR Camera

Toying with the idea of doing some time-lapse photography with your DSLR, but unsure about or intimidated about how to do it? This relatively small book ranks high on (if not at the top of) any list I might compile about "how-to" books. The author gives excellent and highly understandable step-by-step "how tos" with lots of options about how to "get the job done, and done well."Most how-to books I've read or purchased start off well, but inevitably devolve into complicated and unclear attempts at explaining things, as if the author forgot his or her intended audience, their level of knowledge going-in, and so on. Not this book.Rather than turning into a book that starts going overboard, skipping steps that might be intuitive to the author but not the likely reader, Chylinski's book stays clear and on-track.Many of the images in my digital copy of the book are crystal-clear and legible when enlarged, but still there are some that don't translate well, such that a hard copy might be better. Nonetheless, everything that's probably necessary to succeed in learning how to get into time-lapse photography, how to solve common or likely problems, and how to make the final product not just adequate, but one that will dazzle not just the reader but also just about anyone who watches the sequences, is here.Sure, after reading this book, doing some homework, experimenting, and refining technique, you won't be ready for professional-level prime time videos. But you'll be well on your way to learning the basics about how to take that modern "still camera" to a completely different level. Thanks, Ryan! Well done!

Really disappointed that the links in the kindle version did not work but the author says in the book that he has an expanded version in PDF form with working links and that all you have to do is send him an email and he will send it to you. The email address he provided in the book is incorrect. I did find contact information on his website and sent him two emails requesting the pdf with working links. He did send the PDF version which is more interactive. I am reading through it a second time in the hopes of viewing some examples and getting a better understanding of how to get a good timelapse. There is a lot of information in this book so if you are the type that does not like to understand as much as possible about a subject then this book is probably not for you. If you need details then you will appreciate all of the information that the author shares with you about cameras, lens options, and possible issues and solutions. I doubt the book will make me an expert but hopefully practice makes perfect.

Well written, easy to follow book with lots of good info. My only complaints are minor. The author uses several software products and incorporates them into his workflows. I wish the workflow was more generic and not so software specific. Second I wish he had expanded his information on time lapse of sunrise/sunset exposures more. That's an area I needed more help on. Instead he kind of leaves it up to the magical software again to solve the problem. Lastly, I ordered the Kindle version and some of the time lapse examples didn't play correctly. Overall though a good read for anyone wanting to start learning about time lapse photography.

Ryan Chylinski gives a very good basic grounding on the requirements of putting together a good timelapse. The book goes not only into the mechanics of the timelapse, but also talks about the processing of those timelapse. A discussion about several different ways to process the images and several different programs that wok well for that processing. If you want a basic starting manual for the timelapse process, and further resources to consult in the future; I highly recommend this book (both the Kendal and hard copy are great). The hard copy has some illistarations the Kendal edition does not.

Nice Book, lots of information,Very disappointed that the interactive video included in the book did not workin the Kindle version on my Device. However, Author says it works in PDF versionand on other Kindle devices.These videos are an important aspect considering the subject.I have reviewed the PDF version the Author had sent to me.The PDF version is awesome and has all the interactive links. This book is very well designed and written. Suitable for everyone from beginners to the advanced amateur. Ryan also has this book available in PDF format and he provides an email link in the kindle edition to obtain the PDF at no additional cost.The book is very well illustrated and provides 3 different workflows for processing the final product. Unlike some others Ryan advocates shooting the sequences in RAW. I was leaning that way anyway, but after studying the reasoning behind his recommendations I am even more convinced this is the way to go.Unfortunately, his class on time-lapse is not available at the moment, but Ryan says he is planning on offering it around late summer.

I'm in two minds about this book. As I'm a beginner with DSLR time lapse, I wanted something to give me the basics without going into too much technical detail and baffling me with science.This book does that in that it gives you the basics so that you can get out there and start time lapsing (is that a proper verb?) but that's as far as it goes. A few good tips.However....Only half the book is dedicated to the actual getting out there and doing the deed. The other half is about using software which is fine, however, this goes into extreme details but is only any use if you use the same software as the author. It you don't then I'm not sure what use it isReally this should be 2 books. One for the actual mechanics of taking time lapse pictures/video, the other on software.Printing is not great either. Night shots are 100% black with no details as others have said and generally looks cheap.Essentially is looks like the online pages were printed as is and stuck together in a book.Disappointed. Only 3 stars.

I wanted a guide to time lapse photography that would be easy to understand. This is an excellent book, was an easy read and made this subject understandable. It is well written with the beginner in mind. I'm not the worlds best when it comes to having my interest held when reading, but I didn't want to put it down once I had started it. It has made, what I think could be a technically difficult subject very understandable.

The author's writing style is informal yet still provides a lot of information and I found the text very easy to follow which in turn keeps me interested in the content. The book covers a lot of ground, also introducing some more advanced techniques which takes it a little beyond the introduction promised in the title. All in all I am very pleased with the purchase. An email enquiry to the author was also met with a friendly and very helpful reply. Recommended.

This book covers just about everything you need to know to start producing your own time lapse productions.Very well written and explained in great detail, this is the first time I have bought an e-book as I prefer hard copy.However it is very useful to have it to hand on your tablet or Kindle

Overall I like this book - it's given me some more details about a genre of photography that I've become really interested in over the last year or so. It gives you the facts and I like that. However, the writing style is a little stilted and there are grammatical errors throughout. Some of the sample 'photographs' in the night photography section just look like squares of black ink - they don't appear to have any practical use.Despite this, I'd still recommend the book as it gives a really good overview of all of the components of time-lapse - set up, shooting, processing and rendering etc.
