Unless you make your own pesto, this is a very good substitution. The thing I would say is that I would definitely have some recipes ready for the pesto, since even though it is a small jar it does pack a lot of flavor and you don't need to use quite as much as you might think. Unless you love scooping pesto out of a jar and eating it, to each their own. We used it with hot and cold pasta dishes, added a little yogurt to make it creamy, in sandwiches and even used it on top of fish when we baked it. It was so good - we really loved it.
