Heavy thread that's not black, brown or blue
Hard to find heavy duty threads in lots of colors, but this seems to have solved the problem. Not sure if it's as sturdy as button and carpet thread, but it's certainly thicker (and hopefully a lot stronger) than regular sewing thread.
