Great fire pit / grill
So versatile. We can use it as fire pit, make some hot charcoals and start to cook on it, just need to throw a few pieces of wood to make fire again when done eating. We can grill on commercial charcoals or wood charcoals, or cook on propane gas or griddle/dutch open. It functions as so many things. As a fire pit, it's great too. I was worried if it won't be hot enough because it's small, but it's was hotter than expected. Even better than solo stove as it's warmer on legs. Its double wall blocks wind well. The small vent works surprisingly well too. It's really nice to set up fire pit where we want because some campground placed their fire pit in a weird spot. It's easy to pack and set up. Nice looking and makes nice looking fire as well. It's really enjoyable. It has a few downsides. It's kind of small to put firewood as it is. You can still put it there, but need to be careful how to set it. Not sure about durability. I know it's fire pit and won't last long but after first use, all of inside paint was gone, second use the bottom grate was bent. I still think I can use this 5 years but it show more damages every time we use. And propane is convenient to use but also hard to adjust the heat and re-ignite. It's heavy to carry too. I'm not sure if I really need this (but it's a good addition) First we were looking at Petromax Atago. But this was cheaper, has propane and looks like Petromax copied Volcano's design, we decided to get this. For the price, I think it's a great buy.

Great product, VERY versatile
This is a great product. It's everything they say it is. I also bought a cast iron Dutch oven for roasts and stews. And the heat cover cuts my charcoal use requirements significantly. Great for frequent use. Now, from a preppers perspective, using this stove with a Dutch oven makes a lot of sense. It fulfills the 3 requirements every prepper should be looking for: 1) minimal fuel use. 2) minimal cooking smells 3) easy concealment. I buy charcoal when it's on sale, end of season clearance and broken bags. For a bit $30, I have already accumulated enough charcoal to cook with the volcano grill every day for about 2 years. Heavy duty trashcans are a great way to store the charcoal. VERY economical. Of course you can cook with wood as well if grilling. I am now making my own charcoal just from fallen branches from the yard and will probably never buy charcoal again. I really never saw the point in purchasing the propane attachment, but now I am starting to see the practicality of it for some situations. Deep frying and waterbath canning would be pretty easy with the propane unit. If I get one in the near future, I will add to this review. BTW, the carry bag and compact storage are also nice features. This is not a lightweight stove. You are not going to use this while backpacking. It is heavy duty and built to last. Buy with confidence. It's a great product for regular use and will be a Godsend in a grid-down situation.

Multi-tool of grills.
What a great grill/ fireplace. I've been wanting a grill for years, but have been conflicted between the convenience of propane and the flavor of charcoal. This grill solves that problem by giving both options. As a bonus when you are done grilling your steaks, just add a couple sticks of fire would and have a nice camp fire to sit around while you enjoy them. Very portable and well worth the money.

Great stoves for charcoal and wood, propane, not so much.
I've owned this stove (the Volcano 2) for a little over 3 years now and it is a great little stove for dutch oven cooking and grilling. The model I purchased did not have the propane adapter on it but I have purchased a second Volcano 3 recently, thinking propane would be a great option to have on this stove. Well, there are some drawbacks to using propane. The propane adapter is great for frying or grilling but forget about baking anything with it, even if you do have the hood. You just can't get the temperature below 425-450 and it's super hot directly above the burner (of course). The supplied heat diffuser is insufficient to mitigate the intense heat from the burner. The good news is, with the flame turned down low, there is little danger of it being blown out by the wind. The burner itself is relatively small in diameter for a 19,500 BTU burner, which is probably part of the problem. A better valve for regulating flame height might help as well. These stoves work exceptionally well with a 12 inch dutch oven, bean pot or skillet. They fit down inside so they don't slip around at all. The bottom of my stove gets warm to the touch, you can place your hand on it and hold it there without getting burned, as long as you're using the stove for normal baking or cooking. Using it on a picnic table or even a plastic roll around cart as I do is not an issue. Of course, placing hot lids, grates and heat diffusers on that plastic cart is another story. *** Edit 4/18/2016 *** I did some trouble shooting on the gas value (it's a simple ball valve) that regulates the flow of propane after the regulator. It appears to be very cheaply made and when it is turned down to lower settings for baking or simmering, applying any downward pressure on it will shut off the gas to the burner long enough for the burner to go out... Not a good thing since you have to remove your dutch oven or skillet to notice it. This valve is also not replaceable which means the only other means you have of regulating flow is with the tank valve. When it comes time to replace this hose, you're going to have issues finding a replacement as I've never seen another like it. This is, in my humble opinion, the weak link in an otherwise great little stove. *** Edit 1/5/2017 ***. My one complaint about the flame adjustment has been solved. After contacting the distributor, I took the valve apart and lubricated the rubber O ring inside with a little oil. That has made it much easier to adjust the flame height. Now I can adjust it down to the tiniest of flames. Yeah!!!!

We've used the Volcano stove twice to make beans and wieners and roast marshmallows. It was quite enjoyable to 'camp out' in our back yard. The Volcano stove is very versatile with three different fuels. It is also quite heavy, so no backpacking though it would be good to take along in the trunk of your car. If you are headed to a location where dry wood is available, there would be no need to take any fuel along at all. One thing I did not like was that the grill became quite rusty after use. I rubbed it with oil so hopefully that will prevent further rusting.

The Volcano arrived amazingly quickly though somewhat flattened on one side likely due to shipping. Visually it was exactly as advertised. Upon initial use using wood, the Volcano heated up very fast. Smaller wood logs a definite consideration if using as a fire pit. I used about 16" and they were a tad large. The adhesive decals on the sides peeled off easily as the Volcano became warmer. The sides and bottom of the volcano also became too hot to handle so use caution about placing on combustible surfaces as some websites indicate is possible. Cooking/grilling with wood may be a challenge not just due to the size of wood used. Wood would be difficult to add if pots/pans/Dutch oven were in place. Charcoal and propane may not have this difficulty. Also it took well over an hour after the fire was out to be able to handle the stove barehanded. The bottom pan suffered discoloration and paint flaking but that was to be expected. I look forward to taking car camping as the newest cooking gadget but probably will be using in propane mode for temp control. I'll also try to see if I can master cooking with the Volcano using wood.
