Three movie giants come together in the cinematic classic The African Queen, combining the masterful direction of John Huston with the fabulous chemistry of Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn in their only onscreen pairing. Adapted from a novel by C.S. Forester, this wartime romantic adventure sees the pair forced to travel together down a hazardous East African river after the outbreak of World War I. Katharine Hepburn plays Rose Sayer, the maiden-lady sister of a prim British missionary (Robert Morley) . When invading Germans kill her brother and level the village, Charlie Allnut (Bogart in the role which won him his only Oscar), the slovenly, gin-swilling captain of a tramp steamer called the African Queen, offers to take Rose back to civilisation. She can't tolerate his drinking or bad manners; he isn't crazy about her imperious, judgmental attitude. However, it does not take long before their passionate dislike turns to love. Together the disparate duo work to ensure their survival on the treacherous waters and devise an ingenious way to destroy a German gunboat. The African Queen is one of the most beloved films in the history of cinema, and may well be the perfect adventure film. With a roller-coaster storyline complemented by the chemistry between its stars, and masterful direction from John Huston, The Masters of Cinema Series is proud to present The African Queen on Blu-ray in a special Limited Edition. PERFECT BLU RAY TRANSFER
Almost everybody would at some time have seen this film by now, but for anybody that hasn't the story concerns Charlie Allnut, played by Humphrey Bogart, and Rose Sayer, played by Katharine Hepburn. After her brother dies, Rose boards Charlie's river boat 'The African Queen, and together they travel down river in East Africa. The story takes place during the start of world war 1, and rose, who is a total opposite to the gin swigging Charlie, brings some comedy moments to the film. As the story unfolds the two become closer and decide to destroy a German warship. This blu ray transfer is stunning. The film has undergone an extensive restoration. Colours are vibrant, and definition is pin sharp. The sound has also been cleaned up in this restoration, and the film has never looked better, considering it mas made in 1951. In previous DVD releases, in some scenes, the colours was out of true, due to the film being made in technicolor, which is a three strip process. All these problems have now been corrected. If you watch this on a standard DVD, before the restoration, you will see all the problems with the colour, notably at a scene by the rapids. The film has been transferred in it's original aspect ratio of 1.37:1. Is the upgrade to this new restoration on blu ray worth it? Definitely!

Blu-ray and book stuck in slipcase
Right. You may or may not have this problem. So here goes. If you have shaken this eureka masters of cinema blu-ray limited edition in hard slipcase so hard and fast that you may be in danger of breaking the sound barrier, you may have the same problem I did. Still doesn't come out? This rigid slipcase is quite tough. Squeeze your little finger in between the bluray case and the inner edge of the slipcase. Then try and get another finger in. Then apply small pressure and try to move the bluray case out. It should (grudgingly) slide out. Don't try and get the book out (not even with pliers no no no). Once the bluray case is out, the book comes out quite easily. Then put the bluray back in. It should move in and out with no problem. The culprit is either the book or the case or both. Good luck P.s. use only your fingers. No tools. Avoid damage and keep case in good condition. Cheers

WTF??!!! (Worthy To proFfer for your consideration, but you knew that already!)
I'm a bit of a sucker for the classic films, but these films are classics for a reason. Having previously bought the dvd of this back in the mists of time, I have to say that the print is as fresh as a daisy on this blu-ray release, giving full vent to the technicolour of the original print. The film of course is a gem, and has me hankering for the times when films did not have to have gratuitous shedloads of swearing in them for "impact"; it's a bit of a slow-burner where the leads carry the picture beautifully, despite Bogart's rictus grin looking cheesier than normal at times. If you haven't seen it, then just do yourself a favour... What lured me to this print was the promise of a commentary by the late and luminous Jack Cardiff, and I have to say that the edition does not disappoint in this respect. It is lovely to hear tales about the production from the horse's mouth. Both sound and vision are top notch. Well worth the money, and, to put it bluntly, a steal.

Present to a Dear Friend...
A dear friend who I wanted to thank always loved this film - but I recalled how he went through dozens of his old videos recorded from the TV, to try and find it, when I first got to know him. Instead of a box of chocs or bottle of vino, it was this remastered DVD, that I ordered, complete with a free personal note, from Amazon, as a total surprise and delivered direct to his house. And exceptionally good value too, at £4, inc P&P. It's still one of his favourite movies and being a senior doctor, he does actually have a proper player to play it on! The difference in quality from poor VHS to sparkling DVD should leave him speechless! I'm hoping that I can quietly 'borrow' it back, as it's a favourite of mine, too, but somehow I doubt he'll let it out of his sight! Just what the doctor ordered. (Well, I did - and I'm no MD...)

A true "classic"! The movie, packaging and book are all top notch, found it on sale and couldn't resist. The remastered DVD is excellent if you want a Blu Ray copy order the single Blu Ray disc this makes the "combo" much cheaper than the "Blu Ray" box set which is identical to the DVD box set. Greg B.
