Easy install. Nice plotter. $100 rebate
$100 rebate on the cruise 7! Its a nice plotter. I live in Alaska and the stock charts it came with did not work for me. I needed to buy the alaska chart card from Navionics. This plotter is super easy to use and the sounder provides a sharp picture. Easy to drop way points and see all necessary info on the screen at all times. Its a good one! Easy to install too.

Useless in the dark
I was so excited to upgrade from my 20-year-old Garmin chart plotter to the Simrad Cruise 7 . This unit has so many features, bells and whistles but it's useless in the dark. I say it's useless because the control buttons are not lighted so it takes two hands to use the controls at night one to reflect the light from the screen to light up the buttons and the other hand to push the buttons. How am I supposed to steer in the dark looking for an anchorage when it takes two hands to use the chartplotter in the dark? The unlighted controls means you're pushing the wrong buttons in the dark and the screen is not giving you the information you vitally need to safely maneuver and anchor in the dark. It's as though the designers of this unit have never been on a boat and tried to steer or anchor in the dark. I am so angry and disappointed with this semi useless purchase. The return date has passed and I had already epoxied the transducer for the depth sounder inside the hull. During the daytime the unit is great. But boating doesn't always happen in the daytime. Save your money and frustration and go with a different manufacturer. It could have been a great product if they had put some thought behind it. So close. Update: still the worst purchase I ever made for my boat. I checked over all the controls again and again. The black rubber buttons have white symbols in the center telling me light would shine from inside the unit to light those buttons. Did they forget to install a LED light behind the buttons? I feel like driving to the factory and talking to them in person I'm so angry. Of course I won't waste my time. And if they were going to have the top product they would have had it by now. When people comment on my boat and ask questions I always point out the awful and dangerous Simrad chartplotter and I warn them against getting one. How many boating accidents have happened at night because of this failure of their design? How many people have run aground? Has anyone been killed because of the company's negligence in their product design? Simrad's one poor design feature takes the fun and safety out of boating at night.

Good value for the money
Great gps/fish finder easy to install only drawback is that it’s not able to hook up to a vhf radio as its doesn’t support it

It works great and easy to use, screen should be touch screen. You can read it easy while navigating day or night. 4 stars because sometimes the gps is off and you cannot put a satellite overlay. The software will not support it.

Not for Alaska
The preloaded maps are totally inadequate. The islands in our archepelago are represented by ovals. Nowhere in the product description is it made clear that additional map chips must be purchased and installed. An inesperienced navigator would run aground or hit the rocks using the map provided. The unit had many excellent features, but bad maps make it dangerous for navigation. And bad information creates a huge inconveniece for the buyer. The buyer finds out about the bad maps only after having gone to the trouble of installing the unit. I returned it and will stick with Garmin from now on.
