High quality product
I am so much happy with this product, TC HELICON GO VOCAL. It will act ' like ' an external soundcard. 1. Can connect dynamic mic or condenser mic directly to smartphone by this device. 2. Can connect to laptop or Pc . If your computer is an old one with separate jacks for mic and speaker, then buy a splitter cable., (ie 3.5mm male to dual 3.5mm female connector) Connect the male jack of splitter to the headphone out in GOVOCAL, connect the mic end of splitter to PC's mic port and earphone end, to speaker port in PC. It works well in Nuendo. GOVOCAL's headphone out is not like 'direct monitoring'. We cannot hear our voice while recording. We can hear playback. Has phantom power switch. a 9 volt battery is required ( not included with the pack) 👍

Tc helicon go vocal
It has limitations for using with any apple or android phone esp when using for video recording with a vocal processor A sound card would be a better option to the TC HELICON GO VOCAL

Excellent Product.
Excellent Product. But there is ' NO Velcro ' belt like I-Rig includes. IMP note: don't expect to monitor audio through earphones socket WHILE Recording. Because the headphone socket is just an extinction from Phone audio output socket. Go Vocal doesn't have any separate audio monitoring circuit with pre-amp inside. It is only mic pre-amplifier circuit. So whatever you can listen through that headphone socket, comes only from phone (With that TRRS input cable)

I have 2 similar tasks for a portable pre-amp. First is to take a take various instrument and vocal small diaphragm condenser mics and use them for an Iphone based movie rig. The Filmic Pro app loves this pre-amp. This box delivers full scale level into the iphone with no issues. I dont believe in using shotgun type mics indoors or for close in talking head voice and/or ambient sound pickup. The more directional mic capsule can have limitations in frequency response and bandwidth. Shotgun mic sound gives me a rash. Hypercardiod is the narrowest pickup pattern I need. An AKG C1000s in hypercardioid mode has more than enough gain, reach, and articulation for what I am doing. Of course it is too big and heavy for run and gun, but it is not my only option. Without this quality pre-amp my best sounding close up music recording mics will not work well for more distant sources. I know. I tried. What sounds great close up now sounds great further away due to lots of clean gain. A $35 US TC pre-amp, cheap foam windscreens, vibration isolating cold shoe mic adaptor and home made 1 ft. mic. cable leverage my investment in good recording and stage microphones into field capable production microphones. Also I run voice or instrument sounds into ios devices for portable multi track recording. GarageBand channel inputs sit up and take notice when you turn this amp on. Full scale levels from modest output low impedance mics are no problem. I can hit the input hard with a tiny ukulele that would not wake a baby. I admit to being a TC Helicon fanboy. I use TC voice processors. TC uses high quality balanced amp and line drivers even in some of their stage stomp box type units. In other words, balanced line xlr connectors in and out. This unit takes a balanced xlr microphone in and provides a huge clean gain boost. TRRS out connector. It has a slide switch for on, and on + 48 volt phantom power for condenser mics that need it. It has a backlit TC logo to confirm the power is on, plus a 48 volt indicator; so much nicer looking than the sometimes obnoxious led poking out of a small hole as a power indicator. There is a headphone output, 1/8" TRS, for monitoring the mic and device playback. There is a recessed thumb wheel volume control that runs the show. I made a phone call and could use a high quality microphone input to the phone and monitor the call via the headphone out. It is a useful monitor for GarageBand sessions. A nine volt battery powers this amp. The quality of the thick plastic case with high density foam rubber lining for the battery has to be seen and felt to be appreciated. I cannot imagine the battery door falling off or coming loose. The build quality is serious business. In a quiet room with a high quality condenser mic and good studio type headphone this amp produces no noticeable hiss. Hiss and distortion are there somewhere, but I would have to bust out the test equipment to find it. In other words, very high signal to noise ratio. Much the same quality as the microphone pre-amps in TC processors that cost $hundreds$. High signal headroom. An well engineered portable mic preamp that does not stumble when hit with rude signal levels. Very good value. Easy 5 stars; no flaws for my purposes. Highly recommended.

this device is a great quality microphone pre-amp for one mono microphone that connects via XLR. The standard audio jack hardwired to the housing might work well with some android phones or tablets but for anything DSLR, Apple Lightning etc... you'll likely need further adaptation. It's ok but not part of the package so be prepared to buy additional cables/ adapters. The sound of the unit is very clean and I can use any type of wired microphones including the ones in need of phantom power and that's the main purpose of this little guy. I would have preferred 2 AA batts instead of the 9v block but its ok.

Actually I cannot rate it because it does not work with my Rode VideoMic. Nevertheless I set rating to 3 because I tried my spare dynamic mic and it worked but it had some white noice in background. I am not sure whether it does not work with all condensed microphones, but since the device has 40V phantom power it should work. Another suspect is that the device's audio jack may have different pin wiring. But I assume that Rode VideoMic TRS output is kind of more reliable. To connect to Go Vocal I used TSR to XLR adapter. I checked its connectivity as well and it was proper, i.e. XLR's pin #1 to TRS's sleeve, XLR's pin #2 to to TRS's top and pin#3 to TRS's ring. Anyway I had to return it since it does not work for my Rode VideoMic.

This thing is pretty rad! I am a fan of TC Helicon products and when I was looking for a way to plug my Shure SM 58 into my phone I immediately decided to give this a shot. Really cool preamp with an adjustable gain wheel, and phantom power boost for condenser mics. I’ve used it for Smule and to record my band live. When I switched to iPhone I bought a lightning adapter and it’s even better!
