Excellent! (Still)
THIS IS THE VERSION TO BUY! Stay away from the "Classic" version...it is made from cheap materials and changes the original numbering/rules system. This "Vintage" version may be a bit pricey, but comes in a great wooden box and plays just like the original! THIS IS THE GAME YOU PLAYED GROWING UP....my daughter enjoys this game even though she is younger than the recommended age...it is easy to pick up and play... We play this several times a month since the purchase in 2017...still love it! (even though my daughter is getting pretty good at it and has some wins under her belt!)

Stratego - Great family fun
Son has figured out a game he can beat his mother handily in - and we run each other close every time, and he can win as often as he loses :) Outstanding for his happiness - chess was not cutting it because it takes too long to be truly competitive - and Stratego has been brilliant in many ways - it is less experience and formula driven than chess, and the variations in strategy are complex enough to keep everyone interested... quite a freaky game. The vintage wooden box version looks fantastic, and the pieces and board look highly durable - we've been playing this on the beach as well as at home, and there are no issues at all. Overall, highly recommended, simple to learn and hours of fun and complexity.

A elegant version of a classic game for enthusiasts
I just got this in the mail from Target who apparently has dropped the product. Since the price more than doubled over the weekend, it seems this item has become a limited piece. Stratego is a classic game and this edition is a fine reproduction. My wife tells me the board, with two lakes and a river, isnt of the original vintage. The materials seem to be very quality, and the "library" container makes the game really stand out. I know my family will enjoy having this for years to come.

hopefully will be better second time around
The box was all beat up and scratched up really badly. Re-ordering, hopefully will be better second time around.

Good game
This is a good game, but what really needs to be said is the poor quality of the game case. The corners of the wooden case where damaged when I received the game. Not so much of a bad review on the game as it is Amazon and Target.

Classic board game, great wooden box
My sons discovered Stratego while visiting their grandparents, who had a vintage 1970s game. They loved it so much that I knew I wanted to buy it as a Christmas gift for them. However, like most classic toys from my youth, the current versions have been cheapened by plastic parts and cardboard boxes. Even the rules to the new Stratego games have changed, according to reviews I read. I discovered this CLASSIC version of Stratego and immediately ordered it. It is everything I remember from my youth, and my boys love it! The durable wooden box is an added plus to the classic board and pieces, too. The price was also a very reasonable $19.99. It was shipped by Target, via Amazon, so possibly you could avoid the shipping charges by going to a Target store. If you want to buy Stratego for your family game collection, get THIS one.

Know Exactly What You are Buying!!! This does NOT compare to the $40 version.
I wanted to start by saying I loved this game as a kid and still love it today. Stratego is one of my favs of all time!!! Now, as for this edition, I bought the Vintage/Library Editions (or what/however you call them) in the wooden box of Risk and Sorry from Target around Christmas time a few years ago when they first came out (for about $20, if memory serves). My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed those games, and they look wonderful sitting on our book shelf in their trimmed wooden "library" boxes. So, I thought (since my son is now 10 and loves risk) it is time to buy Stratego (got Scrabble for my wife also). I checked on Amazon and saw these versions for around $20 and jumped on them (also noticed what I thought was the same thing on Amazon for around $40). Upon arrival, I immediately noticed a few differences: (1) whereas my previous Vintage Editions are in a trimmed/shaped (rounded edges) "book" like wooden case, this edition is in a really squared-off "boxy" case (2) whereas the previous ones were completely lacquered and finished mahogany colored wood, this edition is relatively unfinished (or just cheaply done) on the back. As these were purchased as family Christmas gifts, I have not opened them to find out about the overall quality of the game board, pieces, etc., but I don't hold out much hope for their quality either. I guess we shall see and respond accordingly by returning the items in the event that these details are also cheaply done. Given that $20 is probably about what the normal cardboard box edition costs in stores, it is probably not really a bad price for this edition. But, as many others have mentioned in the reviews of the $40 edition, the details and trim of those more expensive editions make them really worthy of being passed down to subsequent generations as heirlooms. So, in hindsight, I personally would have opted for the $40 Vintage "Library" Editions that would look better displayed and are worthy of passing down to my kids and grandkids and so on. Once again, this item is probably worth the $20, but just know what it is you are buying and that this is not a "great deal that you are getting on the $40 version."
