I have always used the weber lighter cubes and they work very well. I bought these initially based on price admittedly I was a bit nervous due to some bad reviews. Have used these a few times now and one cube lights the lump charcoal in my kamados just like the competition did. I have not noticed any odd odors as some of the previous reviewers have stated. In fact you can definitely tell there is actually wood within these cubes based on the smell while burning. These are 9 cents per cube vs 19 cents per weber cube. Don't let a few bad reviews deter you, this product works as advertised at a great price. Review: Great value! - They work very well despite their small size. I use them in my Green Egg and it takes just one to start it up, in 10 mins I have a fully lit set of coals. The price per square is about 1/2 that of most other big name starters. 4 star due to some are broken, only a few. Great value!

good buy, and they work as advertised
I read the negative reviews but went ahead and bought these cubes. They are every bit as good as the Weber cubes and slightly cheaper. They are not as messy and I don't notice as much starter odor with these as with the Weber cubes.

Waste of money
Garbage. It's hell to light them, and when they are lit the flame doesn't even come close to the bottom of my weber chimney. I ended up using a paper bag to light the chimney. Just use the weber cubes.

Easier than newspaper
Katon Cubes Charcoal Fire Starter. 100 count Per Barrel Katon Cubes Charcoal Starter lights easily and burns hot to start charcoal. I used newspapers to start charcoal which worked fine but I didn't plan to take a subscription to light coals. Katon cube works great, be sure to light cubes with chimney over them to protect flame from the wind.

These work great to start my lump charcoal
These work great to start my lump charcoal. Sometimes its takes a while to get them lit and/or hard to tell if they stay lit, but I'm getting the hang of it. Once they get going, they are great and getting the lump charcoal heated quickly and evenly. I use 4 at a time for my Primo XL (400 sq in of cooking surface).

While they work, they are harder to light then ...
While they work, they are harder to light then the "white cubes". They also do not put out as much flame so they take longer to light the coals. I tried using 2 at the same time and experienced the same problem. Once these are done I'm going back to the white cubes.

You have to store them in a freezer bag to keep your house from smelling like a chemical plant
They don't work as well as the Meeco SureStart squares but they do work. My problem is the smell. You have to store them in a freezer bag to keep your house from smelling like a chemical plant. The description on Amazon says the cubes are wood chips impregnated with paraffin wax. I'm a retired chemical engineer and the smell is not coming from "paraffin wax". Paraffin wax is for all practical purposes, odorless. This smell is coming from what I think is an unidentified aliphatic hydrocarbon (solvent). I recognize the smell but I don't remember its identity. Unfortunately my wife burned the empty box before I had a chance to read the ingredients. I'm adding this a day or two later. The odor went right through the freezer bag - I am returning the product.
