Amazing value in speakers so good that they have been made for 20 years
These are great small bookshelf speakers from JBL. An indication of how good is that they have been made for nearly 20 years, definitely not a member of the speaker of the month club. These are made for professional use, so there is no wood veneer finish. The flat black case fits in with most decors and holds up well over many years. I've had a pair for a decade and recently bought a second pair for another room. I've been a JBL fan for 50 years, and it's amazing that they offer this quality at such a low price. They are capable of exceptional levels of undistorted neutral clear sound for such a small speaker. Deep base is weak with only a 5.25" woofer, but they are easily paired with a subwoofer. While small enough to be used on the desktop, with a powerfull amp and a preamp with a high pass filter they provide extraordinary sound even when played very loudly in my 400 sq ft living room. I use them in both a 2.1 music room and a 5.1 home theater setup. The high pass filter makes sure that low frequencies are only sent to the subwoofer avoiding distortion in the main speakers. This is only an issue if you listen at very high volumes. Make sure your amp can drive 4 ohm speakers. They pair well with my Fosi 120W/channel class D or vintage JBL SE460 60W/channel class AB amps and Klipsch R-120SW subwoofers.

So How Good Are These Speakers?
I wanted something to iisten to my music in a apartment mini-studio enviro. I've lived with JBL's for decades and have a pair of large studio monitors stored away. These are for blasting and a studio, so wanted quality without blasting the neighbors, cuz I spent years trying to get to turn their junk down. I wanted quality without the volumn. Since I listen to at least 6 hours a day, my headphone use has lead to ringing in my ears, time to let the ears heal. So I checked out everything under $400 bucks. I decided to go this route. I don't really care for powered speakers. I have Bose computer speakers, good for consumer listening. Not pro. Pro means balanced, plus 4. I went with these JBL's and Alesis RA 150 Power Amp. The amp takes plus 4 TRS and I love it, good power for small stuff. So today I put the JBL's to a test. Ran ProTascam CD through small quiet Mackie board, I like these, they are quiet, cheap, great or keyboards, have a nice pre and are just good luge along to a job board and quiet, no noise. Set the levels on the channels, no distortion, set the mains to zero out, lots of headroom and them set the amp levels to the volumn and tried to find the sweet spot of the speakers. Holding ear about 6 inches from the speaker A/B'ed the speakers with my studio AKG240 headphones. I thought this would be THE test. You can't beat the sound of the AKG's with speakers under a grand. So how did these tiny book shelf speakers hold up? Not bad! Not the fullness, or richness of top of the line studio stuff. But I would say they held up 80%. So I'm very happy cuz I didn't spent a grand for em. I wouldn't mix or master with them, but I would put them in a professional level. You can't drive them hard, but they are perfect for my current needs. I spent a good hour back and forth, listening to a wide range of well recorded music. So these are keepers. All the gear mentioned here is reccomended. If you love audio, go pro. Also, I listen to most of my music off my Macs, use audio/in/out boxes. 16bit sounds better with 24/96 converters. Also, If you have a DAW you can up convert your remasters to 24bit. This is bitmapped but still amazing, 24/96 is the standard now, Itunes player play these files. This is for real music lovers. People say it takes up disc space, heck, I have plenty on my terrabyte drives. I just love my music so much.

Damn good Desk Top Speakers!
Wow... these lil speakers surprised me, powerful clear sound. These lil bad boys move some air too... Pleasantly surprised about the mounting hardware it really works. I pounded on these for 2.5 hours... all kinds of music with a beafy Old School receiver and they didn't blink... I remember when my 12'' house speakers cost me $120 (those were the days) But I'm really happy so far.

great sound from a small speaker
These are great speakers for the size and price. very clear and great as a nearfield monitor. almost comparable to my yamaha hs80m in dynamics, only lacking the size, therefore not something you are going to wake the neighbors with. My only complaint is with Amazon shipping me an open box that was cut apart, and had clearly been returned to them multiple times with a used product inside. i don't know how that happens but it was very disturbing to see the shipping labels with names and addresses of 2 other customers on it.

You really need a good dac and amp for this speaker
I use these speakers for my desktop computer. I listen in front of my desk which is very near. The speakers are a little big(5.25"), but acceptable. And these speakers can be placed in horizontal, so they can be placed under monitors horizontally if you have monitor arms, which is a big plus for my desktop setup, I have dual monitor setup and the monitor will not block these speakers. As suggested from other comments I bought a fosi audio amp TDA7498E 160w x 2, the result is not so good. If you listen in front of your desk, you do not need a 160w amp, I can only turn 10% volume at most and the sound is already very loud. Also it has noticeable background electric current noise from the speakers, which is not acceptable. I purchased a second hand nuforce icon amp from ebay instead. This amp is maybe 10 years old, it can output 24w at 4ohm(JBL C1Pro), but it is really enough for listening from desktop. Actually I did not turn more than 50% of the volume. Though the nuforce icon amp is very old, it has almost no background noise, which is much superior than the fosi audio amp. Personally I also think the audio quality is better, too. I also has a CamBridge audio DacMagic 100 dac, connected to my computer. The combination of DacMagic, Icon Amp and JBL C1Pro is really good. They produce fantastic sound. Both DacMagic and Icon Amp are very old products, currently you have more choices at low price. But please purchase qualified dac and amp, not the DIY ones, or from unknown companies, which may not be reliable. Do not look at the numbers, such as 160w, you may not need such a powerful output for near field listening. I think at most 30w amp from any big audio companies should be sufficient for desktop listening. Update 7/23/2023: After more than one years of usage, this pair of speakers is still a great purchase for computer, no complain at all. The weight of the speakers is not heavy as other wood solid speakers, that is a good plus for me since I am using a standing desk which has a loading limit, I do not want a speaker which is even heavier than the monitor.

Finally Got Them
After an couple of days of the run around, and i mean with the expected delivery date, i received my speakers. For the 1st time a received a delivery in it's actual box. I mean, it was not placed in another for shipping purpose. Box had a few dings and damaged areas. The box was completely untaped. Didn't need a knife to open. The speakers itself are amazing. Rugged, heavy and well made. My only issue which kept me from mounting them was that they came with everything but the screws. Right now tweaking to adjustable sound. Will review sound later. Did some updates on this review. Took it to 5 stars. These speakers are incredible. I love good sound and paired with the amp that i bought for the laptop and the equalizer i downloaded they sound studio like. Would recommend.

Great All Around
I bought mine used (not amazon) about 7 years ago. I have them now in my garage. I input my devices in 1/4 Audio input on my xenyx 802 mixer. Then to a NAD 2600A(2x channels @ 150W each). The speakers are both combined on one channel of the amp. The other channel goes to a guitar speaker. I play my KAT KT4 through it, I play my guitar through it, I play music through it by using a Samson wireless guitar system connected to my iPhone, the wireless system receiver is plugged in the mixer With my setup things get loud. I turn it up and my brother in law can hear me 4 streets down. And that’s with amp barely half way. The speakers stay crystal clear. Bass is decent and great for the size of this speaker. - still alive after 7 years and used prior....👍 - Able to handle 150w and still sound great...👍 -Able to handle a wide range of devices.....👍 -Great Value.....👍 I set this system up because it’s stuff I have accumulated over the years and didn’t want to buy yet another thing.
