I agree with some of the criticisms but it's still a captivating story
I read this in a day; it was that absorbing. I understand the criticisms made by reviewers who gave the novel 2 and 3 stars. But it was still a heck of a good story. I was curious to know whether I was the only reader who found the end similar to the end of Avery Corman's novel Kramer Versus Kramer, written nearly 50 years ago. I didn't see any reviews mentioning that similarity. It's only been recently that I discovered Kristin Hannah, and after having read this, Comfort and Joy, Distant Shores, The Things We Do for Love, On Mystic Lake, and Angel Falls this year, I plan to keep reading until I've read the other 10 or so novels that still await! Magic Hour isn't a "perfect" novel but it's entertaining and thought-provoking. I'm glad I read it.

Good, sad
The ending of this is very emotional. Wouldn’t say it’s her best book but definitely a good choice if you like the author

This is an amazingly wonderful book.
I don’t know how to describe it without spoiling it for others. It is riveting, heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, charming characters, a mystery solved, and no cliffhanger ending. Definitely a “curl up in a comfy reading chair with a pot of tea and enjoy” book. May even be a “read mor than once” book Spoiler alert: a brief bit of graphic description of violence, and a bit of mildly graphic sex.

entertaining story
Kind of modern day fairytale. Kept my interest and curiosity. Easy, light read. It’s not a book that leaves you with much afterthought. I guess I’m more drawn to more realistic, thought provoking novels.

Such a beautifully written story
I loved this book because it evoked such strong emotions. The storyline grabs one right from the beginning. I couldn't put it down. I would recommend it to women of all ages. Also to any man who wants to understand the intensity of motherhood. It was a real tear jerker but beautiful. Kristin Hannah does it again!

The Magic Hour
Maybe it’s my mood, and maybe I’m being a little harsh, but The Magic Hour is one of those books that feels almost great. The plot is solid and the writing good, but I kept wishing it had gone deeper. Coming to this novel more than a decade after its release, still felt thin—there are moments where Hannah seems to take creative shortcuts instead of building a stronger, more believable backbone. The story is filled with likable characters, but most feel lightly sketched rather than fully fleshed out. Even the main relationships come together with a kind of Elmer’s-paste fragility. I never quite believed in the romances or friendships—they felt more like outlines of what could have been rich, lived-in connections. Those relationships also seemed secondary to the book’s heart: the bond between a “disgraced” child psychiatrist and the wild child who stumbles out of the woods. That central relationship is powerful, but the rest of the novel doesn’t rise to match it. The supporting cast in the small town had enormous potential—who wouldn’t want to know more about the widow who’s carried her husband’s ashes for twenty years, or the three ancient sisters who run the town? Those could have been wonderful threads in another, more ensemble-style book. Even the sister relationship at the center feels undercooked. It leans too easily into the familiar “Homecoming Queen versus the Smart One with Glasses” trope, with one sister’s ideas constantly being criticized as selfish while the other sister is let off the hook. Still, The Magic Hour is absolutely readable. The plot holds, the characters engage, and the writing moves along smoothly. It just feels a bit like a first draft of something that, with more time, research, and commitment to its core story, could have been truly exceptional.

This is a wonderful book. Hannah is a fantastic storyteller and creates rich characters. This was a real page-turner, although, my personal favorite is still "The Four Winds".

Magic Hour is a deeply emotional and beautifully written novel. The story of a mysterious child found in the woods and the psychologist determined to help her unfolds with heart and depth. Kristin Hannah masterfully explores themes of trauma, healing, and the resilience of the human spirit. The bond that forms between the characters feels authentic and touching, and the small-town setting adds a lovely, intimate atmosphere. Pro: The emotional depth and character development are truly standout — you’ll find yourself completely invested in their journeys. Con: The beginning of the book moves a bit slowly, and it takes some time for the story to really hook you. But once it does, it’s hard to put down. Overall: A powerful and heartwarming novel that lingers with you long after the last page. Worth the read, especially if you enjoy character-driven stories with emotional complexity.

This is the first book I've read by Kristin Hannah and it will not be last. After reading some of the reviews I must admit that I was in two minds whether to purchase this book. I'm glad I did. The book drew me in immediately and emerged me into the lives of Julia, Ellie & Alice. The story holds you to its conclusion & never wavers as some books do. Highly recommended.
