In the trenches with the Republic's Elite...
Republic Commando is a surprisingly challenging, and exciting game! Commando gives the player control of not only his own avatar, but limited control over the other three members of his squad. You as number 38 are the leader of an squad of the Republics elite Clone troopers as they battle their way across numerous theaters fighting separatists and assisting allies like the Wookies on Kasshyk.During game play, you have access to numerous weapons from the hard ammo firing blaster pistol to the clone sniper rifle to many other weapons that you acquire from fallen enemies along the way.Unlike battlefront, Commando limits your experience to one role, however it puts all game progress right into your hands. You can store your game as you go so as to pick up where you left off in the fight or re-start the level if you choose.Along the way you'll be assisted by allies, including Clone regulars and Wookies, and you'll get to explore new worlds, meet interesting droids and aliens and kill them.Another great feature of the game is that each squad member has his own personality. The born killer, the sarcastic joker, the all business soldier. They complain like grunts, joke like grunts, and sound and act like autonomous troops, albeit with adherence to the chain of command. This game is challenging in that the droids and Geonoshians are incredibly formidable opponents! But the access to weapons and demolitions make the game continuously entertaining.I can't praise this game highly enough! The price absolutely cannot be beat! If you're looking for a first person shooter, this is the game for you!Five stars!

Good Old Fashioned Blaster Battles - Special Ops in the Future
Republic Commando is a first person shooter where you play the leader of a unit of elite clone soldiers. Basically non-stop action. The designers made an effort to make the squad AI act like special ops solders with door breaches and use of cover. The team controls and squad AI are better than older versions of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and Call of Duty: Game of the Year Edition . The graphics are a little dated, but it is still good enough to keep it fun. I really enjoyed cutting down droids especially the ones with the force fields. It was also satisfying to spill alien gore and funny to watch your helmet wipe it off like a wiper blade on your car. There is a nice assortment of weapons (blaster, blaster rifle, sniper attachment, grenade attachment, grenades, many alien weapons even a futuristic shotgun and deadly rocket launcher). My favorite was the chain gun. It puts a world of hurt on anything. As some other have said the actions are a little repetitive. Make door breach, plant explosives, take cover behind object and use sniper rifle or throw grenades. I did like the turret guns though. They gave you the feeling of real power. Especially the walker cannon, everything in room shook when that thing fired. I think the missions are well developed but as with most first person shooters (FPS) the single player game is almost completely linear with only one way through to the end. I'm not a Star Wars enthusiast so I'm not familiar with bacta, but the bacta terminals everywhere seemed kind of silly. The game is not that long and I would consider it a low prospect for replay on single player. However, when you do complete the game you can join multiplayer and fight for your life in the normal formats of FPS. It is very easy to play multiplayer. You don't even have to go to a website to locate other players. You can connect directly inside the game. Though there is not a lot that differentiates it from most other FPS multiplayer games except the Star Wars theme. Also note that this version of the game comes in a jewel case. It comes with a manual on the CD, but you probably won't even need to refer to it with as easy as the commands are and the in game explanations.

An oldie but a very gun Star Wars FPS!
I felt myself enjoying Republic Commando a lot more than Battlefront 2 mainly because of the smoother interface, weapon pickup ability, and because it wasn't modeled after a multi-player conquest game or capture the flag. Even the Jedi heros didn't make BF2 a more enjoyable experience. The weapons are more interesting, especially the different grenades the commandos can use. Republic Commando is essentially Rainbow Six Vegas or Call of Duty 4 set in the Star Wars Universe, except you can jump and use a melee weapon. The graphics and music are very appealing, even for a game that is 3+ years old. The action is scripted and a lot of the levels are frustrating wherever there is a major choke point. The Super Battle Droids are extremely tough to destroy without the right weapons. A "headshot" using the sniper attachment doesn't take them out quickly enough. It's bad enough when you encounter a lone Super Battle Droid, but when 5-10 start to gang up on you along with a complement of normal Battle Droids it starts to get hairy. The worst part? (Yes, there is something even worse than that...) The enemy respawns in unlimited numbers if you stay in one spot. If your teammate(s) die in an area, you cannot plow ahead and clear the enemies, then come back to revive them. When you walk back, the same enemies respawn and the whole process repeats. I am not sure how the Republic and Empire ever won any battles but it isn't surprising the casualties were so high. Their weapons and armor sucked the big one. If they re-developed their blasters to kill droids with 1 shot, it'd make life a lot easier. I often wished the Commandos would use lightsabers and just slash through the enemies.
